The most expensive sentence in the novel is not a bet. It is a request for time. Give me but an hour. Wait here until I return. Polina has arrived with the whole of her crisis, and Alexei answers by converting her into a stationary stake while he goes to manufacture a miracle. The hour is what makes the table feel like love. Emergency borrows the costume of devotion. A man who will not stay in the room and hear the problem will run to a wheel that promises to finish the conversation for him.
Chapter 15 is the refutation the fantasy cannot survive and still does. He has the number. Two hundred thousand francs. He expects the plot to turn. She hears a price. Would you buy me as De Griers did? The win did exactly what a win can do: it produced cash. It could not do what the hour promised, which was to make him a rescuer instead of another purchaser in a house already mortgaged to French credit. Dignity was never on the felt. The felt only knows chips.
Astley had already said the useful thing, and Alexei had already refused to leave. A month later he can announce that passion is dead and still answer save me with the same sprint. Years later, with Polina in another country, the hour has simply changed its name to tomorrow. That is the illusion's last form: not a woman in a chair, but a reset that never has to be cashed in daylight. Dostoevsky is not warning you that the jackpot never comes. He is showing you that it came, it was enormous, and it still could not buy the thing the hour was for.
The Central Lesson
The one big win is a clock pretending to be a plan. Alexei asks for an hour, produces a fortune, and is heard as a buyer. Polina will not take money for nothing because the house has already taught her what money is for. Astley was right in chapter 8 and still useless, because the fantasy does not live at the level of advice. It lives in the belief that one session can finish a life. If your next risk needs someone to wait, or needs tomorrow to redeem every prior night, you are not rescuing anyone. You are keeping the hour sacred. Put the hour down.
Applying This to Your Life
Mistrust the Solution That Needs an Hour
If the fix only works if someone waits while you vanish into a risk, you are not helping. You are buying time for a miracle. Stay in the room. Ask what can be done without a jackpot. Emergency language is often how compulsion gets a hall pass.
Ask What Invoice the Cash Is Paying
Polina's wound is being bought, not being broke. A bonus, a settlement, a spectacular gift can still sound like a collar if the relationship has already taught that money means ownership. Name the actual debt before you throw a number at it.
Notice When the Person Leaves and the Clock Stays
Tomorrow all shall be ended is the same hour without Polina in it. If your reset no longer requires the original problem, you were never solving the problem. You were protecting a ritual. Retire the ritual, not just the story about who it was for.

Where the lesson lives in the book
Astley Speaks and Nothing Moves
The Englishman says the quiet facts: stay, and you will compromise a marriage that is still a ledger. Leave, and you would be doing the only clean thing. Alexei's first remark is that he does not intend to go away. He intends, on the contrary, to remain. The warning is received as weather. The plan to remain is already a plan to win.
Key Insight:
An accurate outside view does not dissolve a rescue fantasy. Alexei can hear Astley and still treat departure as the wrong plot. If your friend is right and you stay, you are not gathering more data. You are protecting the hour you have already assigned to the miracle.
“"I do not intend to go away," was my first remark. "I intend, on the contrary, to remain here."”
Save Me, After Passion Is Dead
A month later he can say even his passion for Polina is dead. He can fancy he is mad. Then she is at the door with the old imperative: save me. The rescue script does not require living love. It requires a problem that looks solvable in cash and a man who still thinks one session can rewrite a household. The fantasy outlives the feeling it claimed to serve.
Key Insight:
When the original motive cools and the errand remains, you are no longer saving a person. You are saving a story about yourself as the one who could still do it. Dead passion with a live rescue plot is the illusion at its most honest.
“Oh, Alexis Ivanovitch! Save me, save me!”
Wait Here Just One Hour
She has come with all she has to bring. He answers with a deadline. Give him an hour. Wait until he returns. The room becomes a holding cell for her crisis while he runs to convert devotion into a number. The hour is sacred because it is short. Shortness is what makes a gamble feel like a plan instead of a binge.
Key Insight:
A rescue fantasy always has a clock. The clock is how compulsion borrows the language of emergency. If the solution must happen before she can leave the chair, you have already decided that ordinary help, time, and talk are not allowed to count.
“give me but an hour. Wait here just one hour until I return.”
Two Hundred Thousand, and a Price Tag
He bursts in with the jackpot as if the number were the missing sentence in their life. She will not take money for nothing. Then the wound opens in the form he cannot hear as love: would he buy her for fifty thousand francs as De Griers did? The win arrived. It arrived as purchase. Dignity was the debt, and florins cannot service it.
Key Insight:
The big win fails because it answers the wrong invoice. Polina is not short of a pile. She is trying not to be a commodity. A fortune offered as proof of worth will sound like the same sale with a larger figure.
“Buy me, would you, would you? Would you buy me for fifty thousand francs as De Griers did?”
Not in the Habit of Receiving Nothing
Her refusal is not ingratitude. It is a rule learned in a house where money has already meant ownership. De Griers paid. The General waits on a death. Blanche prices a husband. Into that grammar Alexei carries two hundred thousand francs and a face that expects to be thanked. She answers with the only sentence that keeps her from being inventory.
Key Insight:
If your miracle looks like someone else's collar, the person you meant to free will hear the collar. Test the gift: can they refuse it without losing you? If not, it was never a gift.
“Because I am not in the habit of receiving money for nothing.”
Tomorrow All Shall Be Ended
A year and eight months later the same clock is still running. Astley has told him the truth that should have retired the fantasy. The last line is not repentance. It is another sacred hour: tomorrow, one more stake, and the whole future changed. The one big win has become a portable religion. It does not need Polina in the room anymore. It only needs a tomorrow.
Key Insight:
When the person is gone and the hour remains, you can see what the illusion was always about. Not her. Not even the money. A reset that never has to survive daylight.
“No; tomorrow all shall be ended!”
