Polina's first honest sentence about the bond is not a love speech. It is a complaint about permission. She hates him because she has allowed him to go to such lengths. The lengths are mutual: he offered a life organised around her face, and she accepted the arrangement while despising the fact of the acceptance. That is not a misunderstanding. It is a closed loop. He stays because being necessary feels like being chosen. She keeps him because a stored man is useful, and then hates the storage because it proves she needed an instrument.
Chapter 3 makes the contract visible enough that a prouder person would have left. She does not conceal that he is being kept for an end. She lets him talk while regarding his feelings as weather that does not require a response. He reports this without surprise. The surprise, for the reader, is that the report does not produce an exit. Humiliation here is not an event that happens to a naive tutor. It is a climate he has learned to live in because the climate is the only place he feels fully awake.

The Central Lesson
Humiliation becomes a way of life when being necessary feels better than being respected. Polina keeps Alexei for an end she will not name, hates him for the permission she granted, and still does not send him out of the house. He answers with a cliff, a kill question, and a talent for quoting how little she regards his feelings. The structure is the lesson: contempt can produce attachment if the attachment is the only intensity you have. You do not owe a stored role your self-respect. If someone tells you they are keeping you for an end, do not translate that into a secret tenderness. Necessary is a job description. Ask what the end is, and whether you would do the job if it were posted in public.
Treat Unrevoked Access as a Choice You Are Still Making
Polina hates the lengths she allowed and still does not close the door. You are not required to remain the length. If the other person will not revoke the arrangement, you can. Staying to prove devotion is how the climate becomes a home.
Do Not Confuse Precise Narration with Leaving
Alexei can quote the contempt and still wait for a softening. Insight is not an exit. If you are the best analyst of a bond that keeps diminishing you, use the analysis to change the schedule, not to decorate another night of availability.

Polina does not hide the contradiction. She hates him because she has allowed him to go to such lengths. The devotion is not a secret he forced on her. It is a permission she resents and will not revoke. The tutor's place in the household is already this: necessary enough to keep, despised for having been kept.

Some contempt is not about what you did. It is about what the other person cannot stand having needed. If they hate you for access they granted, leaving is not cruelty. It is refusing to be the proof of their self-disgust.

Utility spoken aloud is still a contract. People stay because the sentence includes necessary, and they translate necessary as chosen. Necessary means stored. Stored is not loved.

On the walk she names the General's mortgage, then tests how far the stored man will go. Kill that man: would you? The question is not a plot. It is a gauge. A relationship that inventories what you would destroy for them is not asking for love. It is checking whether you still have a veto. If the veto is already gone, the next request will not need to be murder. It will only need to be possible.

From Henceforth We Are Strangers
After the public scene she draws a line that sounds like an ending. We are strangers. The sentence would be mercy if it held. It does not hold, because the end she is keeping him for has not arrived. Estrangement here is a posture, not a door. He remains in the house, in the errands, in the analysis of her face.
Key Insight:
Watch for breakups that do not change the schedule. If you are still on call after being declared a stranger, the humiliation has become the operating system: you absorb the insult and keep the availability.

The mountain walk is recalled as a private monument: a height, a dare, a proof that he would go over if she asked. He cannot imagine himself otherwise. The memory is not romance. When you cannot imagine yourself except as the person who would jump, humiliation has finished its work. It has replaced character with a single stunt. Other kinds of loyalty become unthinkable because they would look smaller than the cliff.

How Little She Regards His Feelings
He can quote her attitude with precision: she cares little for what he says or feels. The precision is not protection. Knowing the contempt and remaining inside it is the novel's hardest psychological fact. He is not confused. He is organised around a climate that keeps him vivid.

Clarity without exit is not wisdom. It is a talent for describing the weather in a house you will not leave. If you can narrate the disdain better than anyone and still wait for a softening, the narration is part of the attachment.
