Jackson does not impress her when she hunts him out. That is the point. He is in a crazy house down by the bay, on the edge of the marsh, making rattan, not performing meekness for a professor's daughter who has come to collect a moral. The rent is enormous for what the house is worth. The mill will not pay for the arm. Little did I dream, she writes, and the sentence is already a confession that comfort had been a kind of sleep. The arm is not a symbol she requested. It is a fact that will not stay in the report her class preferred.
She takes that fact to every official who should have been able to convert it into payment. Lawyers, doctors, editors, clergymen: each has a reason the injury is not a crime. His blood had not been paid for so that a larger dividend might be paid. University life, she decides, had not been real. Theories looked well on the page. The chorus of nos is the education. Wickson will later make the lesson domestic: on a ferry he tells her father that a money-grabber can decide whether a scientist teaches in the state university. The dividend stops. She marries Ernest anyway. Out of all remains, she made him happy. Happiness here is not a suburb. It is the last thing she can still give after the neighborhood is gone.
Morehouse has already relocated, pulpit to laborer's clothes, because a sanitarium could not unsay a vision. Avis has farther to go. You must make yourself over again, Ernest writes. The refuges run schools of acting until the assumed role is the real one and the original self would take a watchful act of will. Recognition would get her comrades killed. Solidarity that stays a feeling in a Berkeley dining room is still comfort. Solidarity that reaches the voice, the manners, and the name is a forfeiture. London will not let her keep the old clothes as a souvenir. The marsh house was the first address. The false self is the rent.
The Central Lesson
Comfort is a neighborhood with a theory attached. Avis has to leave both. Jackson's arm gets her out of the dining room. The chorus of offices gets her out of the university story. Wickson on the ferry and the schools of acting get her out of the name. Solidarity that can still go home to Berkeley for the weekend is still comfort. The book charges rent on the marsh house, then on the false self, and will not refund either.
Applying This to Your Life
Sit in the Room the Report Left Out
If your information about harm is all secondhand, you are still at preacher's night. Go to the marsh. Talk to the person working rattan. Let the rent and the stump disagree with the page.
Treat a Chorus of Nos as a Map
When every respectable office declines the same bill, you have found the owner, not a series of misunderstandings. Decide whether you will keep shopping for a kinder no.
Notice When the Name Becomes a Weapon
Some solidarity costs a title, a zip code, a voice. If being recognizable endangers the people you claim to stand with, the old self is not a heritage. It is a leak.

Where the lesson lives in the book
A Clarion-Call to the Heart
After the guests go, Cunningham laughs like a giant and still keeps inviting the socialist back. Avis feels the clarion-call in her chest and tries to file it as personality. It is not only personality. It is the first crack in a life that had never had to choose a side because the side had been the dining room. Fascination is how solidarity often disguises itself before it becomes a cost.
Key Insight:
Comfort starts to feel like a costume once someone has named the room you were born into. Notice the fascination. It is data. It is not yet a choice.
“There was something in that clarion-call of his that went to my heart.”
Rattan by the Marsh
She hunts Jackson out in a ramshackle house on the edge of the marsh and does not find the meek man of the reports. He works rattan and answers without performance. The rent on such houses is enormous relative to their worth. Little did she dream, she writes, the fateful part the arm would play. University theories look printed and hollow beside a stump that her class will not pay for.
Key Insight:
Comfort survives on secondhand reports. Solidarity starts when you sit in the room the report was written to keep you out of. Jackson is not a case study. He is the bill.
“Little did I dream the fateful part Jackson's arm was to play in my life.”
Every Office Says No
She takes the arm to lawyers, doctors, editors, clergymen. Each has a reason the injury is not a crime. His blood had not been paid for in order that a larger dividend might be paid. University life, she writes, had not been real. She had learned theories that looked well on the page and had never seen the life they described. The chorus of polite nos is her first map of who the comfort was funding.
Key Insight:
A respectable no from every respectable office is not confusion. It is a system protecting itself. Treat the chorus as a map, not as proof you were naive and should go home.
“My university life, and study and culture, had not been real.”
A Money-Grabber on the Ferry
Wickson tells Cunningham, by chance on the boat to San Francisco, that a sordid money-grabber can decide whether a scientist teaches in the state university. The Sierra Mills dividend does not arrive. The family is marked. Avis marries Ernest anyway and writes that this, out of all remains, made him happy. The romance is not an escape from the class war. It is her crossing. She does not get to keep Berkeley and the marriage.
Key Insight:
Solidarity that stays theoretical will survive a warning. Solidarity that becomes a household will not. The book makes her pick, and the pick is not a wedding toast. It is a forfeiture.
“And this out of all remains: I made Ernest happy.”
The Bishop Relocates
After the marriage Avis chances on Morehouse, no longer a wealthy clergyman but a worker among the poor. The sanitarium could not make him unsay the vision. Culture and a pulpit could not keep him in the old neighborhood once he refused to call the seeing madness. His move is the difference between sympathy, which can stay home, and solidarity, which changes the address.
Key Insight:
Credibility follows the relocation, not the speech. Morehouse does not criticize power from a safe pulpit. He lives inside the harm he named. That is the test Avis is already failing or passing by inches.
“His position, his culture, could not save him. His views were perilous to society, and society could not conceive that such perilous views could be the product of a sane mind.”
Schools of Acting
Ernest writes that she must make herself over again. The revolutionists keep schools of acting in their refuges. Assumed roles must become real until being the original self would require a watchful exercise of will. This is not costume for an evening. The professor's daughter, recognized, is a weapon against the people she now lives among. Solidarity has reached the voice, the manners, the automatic responses.
Key Insight:
Some solidarity costs the name you were born with. Avis does not get a season of slumming. She has to inhabit a life her old friends would not recognize, because recognition is now a tool of the heel.
“You must make yourself over again.”
