Petit-Picpus then gives them a garden: roses instead of flight, sisters who whisper and do not convert the whisper into a warrant. That is actual rebuilding. It is also still an alias. Sanctuary is an interval. The window is still a job. Hugo's point is not that hiding is fake. It is that a second life often has to be practiced as competent love under a name the file did not issue, for years, without applause and without safety that feels like innocence.

The skill is to keep the table anyway, to refuse the scapegoat that would make the alias permanent, and to tell the real name before the people you saved inherit the fiction.
