The Costume That Demanded a Potion
The novella's real engine is not appetite. It is the standard that made appetite look like a career emergency. Jekyll is not undone because he enjoyed himself. He is undone because he required a public face more than commonly grave, then treated every leftover heat as a contaminant. A man who can bear to be seen as mixed does not need a second skeleton. A man who cannot bear it will call chemistry mercy.
Utterson is the control experiment sitting at the same table. He mortifies a taste for wine and skips the theater for twenty years, yet he remains one lawyer with one name. His austerity is a limit, not a split. Jekyll's austerity is a brand. Once respectability becomes the product you sell, any ordinary fault threatens the inventory. The will, the Soho rooms, the vow after violence: each is a logistics plan for keeping the brand unspotted while the unsellable part still gets hours.
Perfectionism always promises cleanliness and delivers a warehouse. The two months of spotless visiting are not recovery. They are the costume working overtime. When the salt fails, what collapses is not science. What collapses is the fantasy that you can be better than other men in the street and still keep a private animal on payroll. The cost is not that you had a shadow. The cost is that you would not let the shadow wear your name.
The Central Lesson
Perfectionism is not the love of excellence. It is the refusal to let a mixed person be the one who signs the letters. Jekyll wanted a head carried high, then discovered that a statue cannot digest pleasure, so he built a smaller man to do the digesting. Utterson proves the other path is available: deny yourself a vintage without inventing a second citizen. The potion only arrives when the public face has become too expensive to stain. Lower the statue, or the warehouse will keep filling.
Applying This to Your Life
Ask What the Face Is For
Jekyll's grave countenance is a product, not a temperament. If your public manner is more impressive than your private permission to be ordinary, you are already designing a second room. Write down the reputation you are protecting. Then write the human fact it cannot survive. That gap is the potion's job listing.
Prefer Limits to Splits
Utterson skips the theater and still answers to one name. Borrow that shape: fewer hours, fewer drinks, fewer performances, same person. A rule you can keep in daylight is cheaper than a secret identity that lets you break the rule at night and stay admirable at noon.
Treat a Clean Streak as Evidence, Not Proof
Two months of charity and dinner parties convinced Jekyll's friends he was well. They were watching the brand recover. If your reform cannot speak the appetite that caused the crash, you are still wearing the statue. Recovery that cannot be ordinary will hire Hyde again.

Utterson drinks gin alone to punish his love of vintages, and he has not entered a theater in twenty years. He is harsh with himself and strangely gentle with falling men. The book opens with a perfectionist who still lives in one piece.
Key Insight:
Self-denial and self-splitting are not the same skill. Utterson limits a pleasure and remains one person. Jekyll demands a public face so clean that pleasure has to become another citizen.

The Exceptionally Blameless Life
Jekyll asks Utterson to drop the will and to protect Hyde anyway. Under the courtesy is a man who needs his reputation to stay exceptional. Ordinary guilt would have been cheaper than a potion. Exceptional innocence is expensive.
Key Insight:
Perfectionism often advertises itself as ethics. Listen for the claim that your case is unique, your standards higher, your lapse unthinkable. That claim is how a secret starts charging rent.

Reform as a Fresh Coat of Gravity
After Carew, Jekyll looks ill and resolved. He will be good now. The laboratory is still there. The vow is not a new ethic. It is the old standard trying to survive a murder by speaking louder.
Key Insight:
A perfectionist crash is often followed by a perfectionist reset: harsher rules, cleaner calendar, same unlivable aim. If the standard that created the secret is still on the wall, the secret is only between jobs.
Two Months of Spotless Performance
Hyde vanishes. Jekyll becomes social, charitable, present. Then the door shuts even to Utterson. The interval looks like cure because the public face is working again. It is white-knuckle purity, not a changed aim.
Key Insight:
Watch the quality of a good stretch. If it cannot admit appetite, it is still the costume. Perfectionism counts days clean. Integration counts whether the denied material has a lawful place in the same week.

The Voice That Is Not the Master's
Poole has served Jekyll for twenty years and still cannot swear the thing behind the baize door is his employer. The notes beg for a salt. The house has been keeping a standard so high that the man inside can no longer sound like himself.

Impossible standards eventually produce a voice your own people do not recognize. If the people who keep your life running start asking whether you are still you, the costume has started speaking.

Jekyll's statement locates the wound before chemistry. He wanted to carry his head high and wear a graver face than other men. The pleasures were not unspeakable. They were unseemly for the statue he had agreed to be.

Perfectionism is not high taste. It is a public sculpture you then have to feed in private. The potion is only the late technology of a man who would not let an ordinary fault stay attached to his name.
