In London he answers two women at once and makes a street assault sound like nothing the law would recognize as property. Rachel puts him in the light and asks about Luker. He closes the file to save her reputation, which is too pure to be trifled with. Then Clack, stuck behind the curtains, hears the other voice. Charitable business is an unendurable nuisance. A Ladies' Committee makes him wish himself at the ends of the earth. The platform was a costume. The drapery is a hire. Rachel is tired enough, after the death and the furnished house at Brighton, to confuse relief with a second attachment. He becomes the obvious arrangement.
When she breaks it, he inventories the loss: girl, position, income. He submits without a struggle. Clack has to invent a spiritual meaning for composure that is only a ledger closing. Bruff, who does not need a hymn, opens the books and names the mercenary object. Granted, the thing is done every day. Collins is not shocked by hypocrisy as a vice. He is interested in hypocrisy as a method: charity as cover, purity as a gag order, calm as proof that the fortune mattered more than the girl. The skill is listening for the curtain. If the public saint cannot afford a second audience, the first audience was never the point.
The Central Lesson
Respectability is a costume that works because the room wants it to. Godfrey does not need to be a mastermind. He needs a platform, a girl's reputation to hide behind, and a household tired enough to take relief for love. The curtain is the tell. Charity becomes a nuisance. The broken engagement becomes an inventory. Bruff, who will not sing, is the first person to treat the courtship as a hire. If you only ever hear the committee voice, you are still in the audience the crime required.

Audit the Man the Room Already Likes
Respectability is assigned early. If nobody is allowed to check the Christian gentleman, that is the check. The rose-garden is not proof of safety.
Listen for the Voice That Needs No Audience
Committees hear nuisance. Girls hear protection of their reputation. Ask which sentence appears when the speaker thinks the drapery is empty.
Open the Books When the Calm Is Too Complete
A fortune disappearing without a struggle is inventory, not grace. Hand the story to someone whose job is paperwork. Charm is a financial statement if you let it be.

Rachel's birthday brings the Diamond and Godfrey Ablewhite's first proposal in the same afternoon. Penelope saw him take her away alone into the rose-garden. He is already the household's favorite Christian gentleman. She refuses him before dinner, and the refusal looks like a girl's whim rather than a first accurate read of a man who has not yet had to drop the platform voice.
Key Insight:
Respectability arrives early, as a reputation you are not supposed to audit. The man everyone already likes does not have to prove he is safe. He only has to keep performing the role the room assigned him.

Godfrey enters the London drawing room with perfect timing and answers Lady Verinder and Miss Clack in the same breath. Northumberland Street was a trifle. He lost nothing the law would recognize. Rachel plants him in the light and asks about Luker. He closes the subject to protect her. Her reputation, dearest Rachel, is something too pure and too sacred to be trifled with.
Key Insight:
A man who works this hard to look unbothered is managing a ledger. When the public saint asks you not to appear in the story, he is often protecting the story, not you.

Behind the Curtain
Miss Clack is trapped in the drapery while Godfrey drops the philanthropic costume. Charitable business is an unendurable nuisance to him now. A Ladies' Committee makes him wish himself at the uttermost ends of the earth. Rachel is raw. He offers himself as the clean alternative to the cousin she thinks is poison. The platform speech was the costume. This is the hire.
Key Insight:
Watch what a respectable person says when they believe the audience is gone. The committee voice is for the room. The curtain voice is the contract.

The Furnished House at Brighton
Lady Verinder is dead. Old Mr. Ablewhite proposes a furnished house at Brighton, a useful relocation for a girl the scandal has made expensive. Rachel is campaigned over. Godfrey becomes the obvious next arrangement, the gentleman already in the family who can stabilize what piety could not. Timing is part of the costume.
Key Insight:
Respectability often proposes after a death, a will, or a move, when the target is tired enough to confuse relief with love. Notice who becomes convenient when the household is between addresses.

Submitted Without a Struggle
Rachel breaks the engagement. Godfrey lists what he has lost: a beautiful girl, an excellent social position, and a handsome income. He has submitted to it without a struggle. The calm is so complete that even Miss Clack has to invent a spiritual diagnosis to keep him holy. Real loss leaves a mark. This composure is inventory.
Key Insight:
Theatrical ease after a fortune disappears is not maturity. It is the sound of a man who was never buying the girl, only the income attached to her name.

The Lawyer Opens the Books
Bruff takes the pen and names the two keys at once: why Rachel broke the engagement, and the mercenary object of the marriage on Godfrey's side. Sentiment leaves the room. Documents, a deathbed will, and professional leverage do the work the drawing room refused. Granted, Bruff says, the thing is done every day.
Key Insight:
Respectability hates paperwork. The first person who treats charm as a financial statement is usually the first person who can see the crime the drawing room was decorating.
