Expected money is the most expensive kind, because you spend the life in advance. If your plan requires a relative to die on schedule, you do not have a plan. You have a wish with table manners.
Garth's Name on the Bill
Fred's debt to Bambridge has grown from horses and hope. Caleb co-signed without telling Susan. The signature is affection trying to be a financial instrument. It will not hold.
Key Insight:
Borrowed money is often borrowed character. If your repayment story requires someone else's household to stay quiet, you are already spending people who cook and save. Charm after the fact is not payment.
When the Horse Will Not Sell
The resale plan dies in a stable. Fred has fifty pounds and a due date. He rides to the Garths because Mary's opinion weighs more than his father's scolding. The bill becomes moral the moment it lands on people who cannot spare it.
Key Insight:
Watch who loses sleep when the scheme fails. That is the real creditor. A debt that only hurts your pride is still a story you are telling about yourself. A debt that hurts a teacher's wages is a character test you have already sat.
The Gray Horse She Did Not Ask For
Captain Lydgate flatters Rosamond for hours. She rides. Permission is obtained after the pleasure. Tertius swallows disgust and leaves rank to penetrate the guest list while the household's real numbers wait in another room.
Key Insight:
Spending that requires secrecy is already a test. Rosamond treats permission as something to collect after the fact. Lydgate treats disgust as something to swallow. Neither is looking at the bill. Both will live with it.
A Thousand Pounds and No Common Speech
Christmas bills and a furniture man named Dover crush Lydgate's mind. Eliot insists debt has a social face: tradesmen's letters gall pride before anyone seizes a plate. Husband and wife are yoked in sordid preoccupation before either can say the figure in a usable sentence.
Key Insight:
Pride and debt sleep in the same bed. A household that cannot speak the number is already in default. If asking would name the life you can no longer afford, you will keep performing the life until the performance is repossessed.
The Letter He Did Not Send
Rosamond writes to Sir Godwin. The uncle answers the husband: do not set your wife to write when you have anything to ask. Lydgate names the secret opposition. She weeps and wishes she had died with the baby. Nevertheless, Eliot says, she had mastered him. The side door has become the government of the house.

A second set of books does not have to be a ledger in a drawer. It can be a letter. If one partner manages cash through a channel the other is not allowed to see, you do not have a marriage with a money problem. You have two administrations, and only one of them votes.

Watch Who Pays When the Horse Fails
Fred's charm does not reach the Garths' short wages. Character is not how you talk about money in prosperity. It is whose sleep and whose savings absorb the loss. If that person is not in the room when you sign, you are spending a household that did not vote.
Treat a Secret Channel as a Coup
A letter to an uncle, a ride taken before permission, a lender chosen in panic: these are not clerical errors. They are a second set of books. If help can only arrive through a door your partner is not allowed to see, the help is already governing you.
