He stands up to be a reformer and cannot keep a sentence on its feet. A man in the crowd does not want his ideas. He wants the Bill. Then come the eggs, and something like Punch, and the public conversion of a gentleman into a joke. Will Ladislaw, who has been trying to give the Pioneer an actual line, watches the candidacy die in the open. Floundering, he says, might answer for once. It does not. The town has already written the review.
Eliot is not sneering at Reform. She is measuring the distance between a feeling of purpose and a craft that can survive other people. Lydgate votes for Tyke to keep Bulstrode's money on the hospital, then tells himself the fever work justifies the worse chaplain. Brooke funds a paper he cannot think through. Both men are sincere. Both treat resistance as a misunderstanding that intelligence will clear. The parish experiences change as a threat to status, tithes, and the old doctor's pride. Eggs are crude instruments. They are also what happens when idealism arrives without a sequence, a cost column, or a memory of the last time this speaker changed his weather.
The counterexample is not cynicism. It is Garth talking levels and cottages while Solomon stirs fear about steam. Purpose that can be surveyed looks smaller than a nomination speech. It is also the only kind that still exists after the meeting adjourns. Understanding idealism's limits means keeping the fire without letting it substitute for a paragraph that lands, a vote you can defend, and a patron whose hobby will not become your humiliation. If the cause cannot survive a heckle, it was never built for the people you claimed to serve. It was built for the warmth of having served them in your head.
The Central Lesson
Idealism fails in Middlemarch when it is a feeling that has not yet become a craft. Brooke's hustings die in eggs because he brought quotations to a crowd that wanted a Bill. Lydgate's hospital inherits a banker's stain because he treated funding as scenery and a worse chaplain as a necessity. Sincerity does not educate a parish out of fear, and intelligence does not replace a sequence of steps another person can follow. Keep the fire. Then ask whether the purpose can survive a heckle, a ledger, and a patron whose hobby is not the same as your life. If it cannot, you are not serving the people you named. You are serving the warmth of having meant to. Garth's unglamorous measurements are the adult form of the same hunger. Build that, or wait for Punch to finish your sentence.

Write the Sequence, Not the Mood
Brooke has opinions and no consecutive thought. Before you take a public position, say the next three steps out loud. If you cannot, you are collecting pamphlets. A crowd will finish the speech for you, and not kindly.
Price the Allies Your Cause Requires
Lydgate's hospital needs Bulstrode, so Tyke gets the chaplaincy. Name who you are spending to keep the scheme alive. If the name makes you wince, the idealism has already started to eat your judgment.
Prefer Work That Can Be Surveyed
Garth's drains and Dorothea's cottages have measurements. Nomination speeches do not. When a project only feels real on a platform, ask what would still be true if nobody came. That remainder is the actual purpose.

Lydgate likes Farebrother and still votes with Bulstrode for Tyke as hospital chaplain. He tells himself the hospital needs the banker's money more than the better man needs the post. The boardroom is his first proof that reform will ask him to spend people he respects in order to keep a scheme alive.
Key Insight:
Idealism starts spending its friends earlier than it admits. If the cause requires you to call a worse appointment a necessity, you are already trading judgment for momentum. The hospital has not been saved. Your independence has been priced.
Will, the Pioneer, and a Patron's Hobby
Mr. Brooke wants to be a reformer the way he wants to be a talker: with quotations, good intentions, and no consecutive thought. Will Ladislaw tries to give the Pioneer an actual line. The gap between Brooke's enthusiasm and a usable politics is already a joke the town will finish later.
Key Insight:
A patron's idealism is often a hobby with a budget. If the person funding the cause cannot hold a thought through a paragraph, you are not building a movement. You are staffing a performance that will collapse at the first heckle.
Cadwallader Names the Drift
The county men watch Brooke's new opinions with the calm of people who have heard him before. Mrs. Cadwallader treats the reform fit as another of his weather systems. The warning is social, not theoretical: Middlemarch has seen gentlemen catch ideas the way they catch colds.
Key Insight:
Communities discount idealism they have watched evaporate. If your reputation is inconsistency, even a true position will be heard as mood. Purpose needs a memory. Brooke never kept one.
Fever, Rumour, and the New Doctor
Lydgate's hospital work meets jealousy dressed as medical caution. New methods read as insult. He tells himself competence will educate the resistance away. Farebrother has already warned him about money. The town experiences change as a threat to status, not as a lecture it failed to attend.
Key Insight:
Moral clarity is not practical immunity. Being right about fever does not make a parish grateful. Idealists often skip the part where other people's livelihoods are tied to the old method. That skip is not courage. It is a map with the cost column blank.
Punch, Eggs, and the Bill
Brooke stands up to speak for Reform and cannot keep a sentence on its feet. A voice from the crowd wants the Bill, not his ideas. An effigy and flying eggs turn a gentleman into a joke. Will watches the candidacy die in public and says the only chance now is that floundering may answer for once. It does not.
Key Insight:
A crowd will finish any speech that was never built to land. Brooke had opinions. He did not have a sequence. Idealism that cannot survive heckling was already a private comfort, not a public craft. Eggs are crude. They are also a review.

Railways, Fear, and Actual Ground
Steam cuts the parishes. Solomon Featherstone stirs panic at the Weights and Scales. Garth talks land, levels, and work that will outlast the meeting. Dorothea wants cottages in plain words. The contrast with Brooke's hustings is Eliot's point: one kind of purpose can be surveyed. The other can only be applauded until the eggs arrive.
Key Insight:
If you cannot point to the tenant, the road, or the drain, you may be in love with the feeling of reform. Garth's usefulness is unglamorous because it has measurements. Idealism that refuses measurements will always prefer a platform.
The Hospital After the Stain
Once Bulstrode's name is poison, Lydgate's fever work is no longer a clean cause. Dorothea still asks him what the hospital needs. The scheme that was supposed to carry him into discovery is now a site of contamination. Purpose did not protect him from the web he treated as scenery.
Key Insight:
A project inherits the reputations that fund it. If your idealism required a banker you did not examine, the town will examine him for you, and then examine you. Independence postponed is independence lost.
