The treatise then shows how a religious costume is sewn. Beginners take pride in diligence, speak of spiritual things in company, and grow angry when consolation is withdrawn. Each habit keeps a name in circulation: the devout one, the advanced one, the one who is making progress. When God takes meditation away, that name has nothing left to stand on. Going forth unobserved is not a rebrand. It is a refusal to let the old self chair the meeting about its replacement.
Book Two sets the same stanza down in a darker key. The night of sense was a weaning. The night of the spirit takes the story you told about why the weaning happened. Friends seem to withdraw. God feels against you. What remains is not a new brand. It is hunger. Stop Supervising the Departure
A dissolving identity will demand to approve its own replacement. When you catch yourself forcing a new role, a new vocabulary, or a new public story so the gap will close, that is the watchman waking. John's image is the opposite: leave while the old managers are asleep.
Trust Hunger Over the Résumé
