Breaking Free from Inner Turmoil — Dark Night of the Soul

The stanza says the soul went forth without being observed, its house now at rest. Going forth is deliverance from the house of sense through quiet and subjection. Desires and passions have been put to sleep, so they no longer block the road to divine union. The soul is not sneaking out of a fight. The fight has gone quiet, and that quiet is what lets it move toward God without being pulled back.

Without being observed means the old affections and natural desires cannot hinder the departure. They are stilled and put to sleep in this purgative night, so the soul can go to the spiritual union of perfect love without being dragged back by every impulse. Rest here is not numbness. It is order: the house of sense no longer runs the household.

My house being now at rest names that sensual part where those desires and affections dwell. When natural desires are mortified and asleep, the soul goes forth to the spiritual liberty of the children of God, to union with the Beloved. Saint John is describing an inner quiet that makes movement possible. You leave because the house finally sleeps, not because you have overpowered it with effort.
