Another book cannot do the waiting for you. Accumulating methods is control dressed as hunger for wisdom. Poverty of spirit begins when you stop shopping for a better grip.

The Penance Hidden from the Confessor
Lured by sweetness, they strive more after spiritual pleasure than after purity and discretion. They set their own opinion before obedience. They kill themselves with penances and conceal the extra fasts, sometimes even from their own confessor. The hidden extra is the giveaway: the will still wants to run the experiment without a witness who could say stop.
Key Insight:
Control of the high is still control. If you cannot sit when the sweetness is gone, and if you hide the extra work from the person who could restrain you, you were managing an experience, not yielding a will.

God now communicates by simple contemplation without images. The attitude to be observed is to pay no heed either to discursive meditation or to the desire to feel pleasure. John hears it as the only remaining fidelity.
Key Insight:
Letting go of control here is concrete: stop restarting the old considerations. The faculty you keep forcing has already been taken offline.

Jonah in the Belly
The Divine and the human meet as two extremes. The soul seems dissolved, as if swallowed by a beast and felt itself being devoured in its belly, as Jonah felt. It is in this sepulcher of dark death that the soul must be in order to attain the spiritual resurrection it hopes for. There is no clause where you direct the pace.
Key Insight:
When the night reaches the spirit, management language fails. You are not facilitating your own renewal. You are being acted on.

The Log Does Not Choose the Hour

Divine fire purges contrary accidents, then unites. You can stay in the fire or you can jump. You cannot appoint the minute you become flame.

The last control John takes away is the timetable. Staying is the work you still have. Timing belongs to the fire.
