Union puts the soul to sleep as regards the world, and then the soul returns to itself. Teresa will not let the visit become a career of absence. God was within; years may pass before it happens again; you will not doubt it; the convent still needs a foundress. The butterfly of the fifth mansions lays eggs and dies. Love of God and neighbor, works expected: that is how she keeps a rapture from becoming a rank. The inner event that will not pay the neighbor is not depth. It is a nest.
By spiritual marriage the image is rain into a river, one liquid. Martha and Mary must both entertain the Guest. Mary at His feet without her sister's help offers Him no food. His food is souls drawn to Him. The importance of the work matters less than the love with which it is done. Teresa wrote this in two months under obedience, ill, founding houses, after churchmen took her Life. She is not an argument for leaving the kitchen. She is an argument that the kitchen is inside the diamond, and that venomous creatures from the moat still want revenge. Integration is not the end of enemies. It is remaining mixed.
The epilogue is glad the book is finished and still holds a door open for the sister called out to serve the prioress. You may walk the castle at any hour without asking leave. You may also be interrupted. Humility, thinking yourself unworthy of the third, may get you the fifth sooner than a campaign to stay at the feet while the pots burn. Teresa will not shove anyone through a shut door, and she will not bless a locked oratory that cannot hear the call from the hall. The last rooms are a Guest kept by two women, not a mystic who has graduated from chores.
The Central Lesson
The Interior Castle does not end in a locked oratory. Union returns the soul to itself. The butterfly still owes the neighbor. Rain becomes the river, one liquid, and Martha still has to help Mary feed the Guest. Love, not the importance of the work, is what He counts. Teresa leaves a house you may walk without leave, and a door held open when you are called out to serve. Depth that cannot survive the kitchen was never the center. It was a courtyard with better lighting.

Let the Neighbor Grade the Visit
If the hour of prayer makes you less available, less kind, less willing to be interrupted, Teresa has already failed that exam for you. Works are expected. The butterfly owes eggs.
Keep Both Sisters at the Table
Mary without Martha is inhospitable. Martha without love is only a larger pile of tasks. Ask which sister you have fired, then hire her back. The Guest eats what both prepare.
Hold the Door When You Are Called Out
Walking the interior at will does not cancel the prioress. Service that interrupts prayer is not a demotion in this book. It is how the house stays a house and not a sealed chapel.

In the prayer of union the soul is asleep as regards the world and itself. Then it returns. God visits in a manner which prevents its doubting that it dwelt in Him, and years may pass before the favour recurs. The visit is not a career of withdrawal. It is a fact the soul cannot forget, after which the world is still there. Integration begins at that return: the same woman, the same work, a memory that will not become an excuse to stop serving.

Union that cannot survive coming back to itself was never a house. It was a nap. Teresa's mystic has to wake into duties she did not cancel.

Two Things, and Works
The butterfly lays eggs that produce more of its kind and then dies. True union is renouncing our own will. Our Lord asks but two things: love for Him and for our neighbour. He expects works. Chapter 10 will not let the fifth mansion become a private rank. Love the neighbor or the insect dies after a few eggs. The inner event that does not pay this bill has not integrated. It has nested.
Key Insight:
The neighbor is not a distraction from God. In this book the neighbor is how you know the union was not a costume. Works are the outer face of the inner death.

One Liquid
Spiritual marriage is like rain falling from heaven into a river or stream, becoming one and the same liquid. The little butterfly dies with supreme joy, for Christ is her life. Mixture, not compartment: the later rooms are not a chapel you visit and a convent you endure. They are one water. Teresa is still a foundress. The liquid has to run through kitchens, foundations, and letters, or it was only a metaphor in a dry basin.
Key Insight:
Integration here is not balance between two lives. It is mixture. If you still switch modes, spiritual and practical, the rain has not reached the river.

Both Must Entertain the Guest
Both Martha and Mary must entertain our Lord and keep Him as their Guest, nor must they be so inhospitable as to offer Him no food. How can Mary do this while she sits at His feet, if her sister does not help her? His food is that in every possible way we should draw souls to Him. Our Lord does not care so much for the importance of our works as for the love with which they are done. Venomous creatures from the moat still unite to revenge themselves. The last rooms are not a sealed chapel. They are a house that still has a kitchen.
Key Insight:
Mary without Martha is inhospitable. Martha without love is only importance. Teresa wants both at the same table, and love as the value of the work, not the size of it.

A Door Held Open for the One Called Out
Teresa was reluctant to begin and is glad the labor is finished. She leaves an interior castle her sisters may walk without asking leave, and she will not shove a soul through a door the Lord has shut. The epilogue still has a prioress. Service interrupts prayer and the door stays held open. Humility remains the beloved virtue. The teaching text ends without a finished mystic, because the convent still has work and the King still admits whom He will.
Key Insight:
The last integration is permission to walk the house and permission to be called out of it. A spirituality that cannot be interrupted by service was never the seventh mansion. It was a locked oratory.
