It is noticing that something is already speaking in your mouth, and that the thinkers who looked most original were still running weather they did not invent. You are already created. The question is by whom.
Rebellion is the usual next costume, and it is still a reaction. Invert the parental list and you are using the list. Profound things love the mask: a new identity can be tighter than the old piety. Only later does he allow construction. Is there anything finer than to search for one's own virtues? Good Europeans still wear a pigtail of inherited sweetness. A value that needs an audience is a rental.

Inventory Before You Invent
Write the rules you actually obey around work, family, money, and guilt. Then write who first needed those rules. Nietzsche's first move is not a new self. It is catching the old author. Without that list, creation is just a louder costume.
Refuse the Inverted Script
If your identity is mainly what you are not, you are still being written. Contrarianism feels like authorship because it produces conflict. Duration is the test: a position you can hold after the argument ends and the old room has stopped watching.
Keep Only What Survives Being Unwatched
A virtue that needs a performance review is not yours yet. Practice one standard in a week when no one will praise it. If it disappears, you found a rental. If it stays, you have the beginning of a rulebook.

Self-creation stalls here: you can inherit a method without ever authoring a standard the method did not pre-approve.
Key Insight:
You can master a field and still rent your conscience from the field's gatekeepers. Authorship means risking a standard your specialty did not bless in advance.

Search for Virtues That Survive the Dark
After the demolition, Nietzsche asks whether there is anything finer than to search for one's own virtues. Good Europeans still wear a pigtail. Their sweetness is often a social technology. A value that only appears when the group is watching is the group's value, renting your conduct. Self-creation means fewer rules, held when they cost you, with reasons that do not require a chorus.
Key Insight:
The test is cost. If honesty, loyalty, or courage vanish the moment they become expensive, they were never yours. They were the room's.

The Determiner Who Does Not Need Approval
The noble type regards himself as a determiner of values. He does not require to be approved of. Reverence for oneself is not a performance of superiority. Arrogance still needs spectators. Self-creation ends in fewer, firmer standards, not in a larger costume. If you still need the room to tell you that you exist, the audit is not finished.
