Fyodor Dostoevsky spent time in a Siberian labour camp for revolutionary activity, then wrote novels that put desperate, self-destructive minds on the page in full detail. He is less interested in plot twists than in why a person justifies the choice right before making it — which is why his characters still feel uncomfortably familiar.
