D'Artagnan comes back sweating and empty-handed. The man of Meung has vanished again, and the house he leaned against has sat empty for six months. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are waiting in his rooms. He sends Planchet downstairs for Bonacieux's Beaugency wine, then tells them the whole case: the landlord's wife has been carried off, and the abductor is the same scarred gentleman from the Jolly Miller. Athos tastes the wine and asks whether fifty pistoles are worth four heads. D'Artagnan says the real stake is the queen, abandoned by the king and hunted by the cardinal. He would risk his own head to put Buckingham in her path if it would enrage Richelieu.
Aramis then offers a story he pretends is theology. Yesterday, walking a doctor's niece to her carriage, a tall dark man and five followers asked Monsieur Duke to enter a coach without a sound. D'Artagnan sees the mix-up at once: they took Aramis for Buckingham and the woman for the queen. That makes the mercer's wife the key of the intrigue. Porthos still wants a bargain first. Before they can move, Bonacieux bursts in screaming that four men have come to arrest him.
D'Artagnan stops the half-drawn swords. Fighting now will only get them jailed with the mercer. He invites the Guards in as a loyal servant of king and cardinal, whispers that they can save Bonacieux only by staying free, then shoves the stunned landlord into their hands as a shabby creditor. He toasts Boisrenard in Bonacieux's own wine and drinks to the cardinal. Porthos calls it villainy. Athos and Aramis call it the longest head in the room. The four swear All for one, one for all, and D'Artagnan sends them home: from this moment they are at feud with the cardinal.
Sometimes the move that looks like betrayal is the only way to stay in the game. When four Guards fill D'Artagnan's antechamber, he stops the swords, whispers that they can save Bonacieux only by remaining free, and pushes the mercer forward as a creditor chasing rent.
Before you draw for someone in a watched room, ask whether your fight would free them or only get you taken with them.
Police already know the trick called a mousetrap: after a secret arrest, men wait in the first room, open to every knock, and hold whoever walks in. Bonacieux's ground floor becomes that trap, and D'Artagnan starts listening through the boards.
