After Bonacieux is taken, his ground-floor rooms become a mousetrap. The arrest stays secret. Men wait in the first room, open to every knock, and hold whoever walks in. A separate stair to D'Artagnan's floor keeps his visitors clear. He stays put, pulls a plank from the boards, and listens. The questions are always the same: has Mme. Bonacieux sent anything, has her husband, has anyone spoken? He decides they do not yet know whether Buckingham is in Paris, or whether the queen has seen him. Athos even asks Tréville, who only reports a thoughtful cardinal, an uneasy king, and a queen with red eyes. Tréville tells them to keep their duty to the king, and still more to the queen.
On the next evening a woman is taken below. There are no questions, only force. She cries that she is mistress of the house, that she is Mme. Bonacieux, that she belongs to the queen. D'Artagnan sends Planchet for the three Musketeers, drops from his window, and knocks at the trapped door himself. The four men in black last about ten minutes. Only one is armed. Neighbours shut their windows and go back to bed.
Left with her, he sees a cambric handkerchief with the same cipher that nearly unmade his friendship with Aramis, and he slips it back into her pocket. She escaped down sheets after learning why she was taken. She came home to use her husband as a message to Laporte, not as a shield. He hides her at Athos's rooms with a three-tap signal, then takes her password to the Louvre: ask for Germain, say Tours and Bruxelles, send Laporte. Laporte warns him to build an alibi. D'Artagnan sets Tréville's office clock back three-quarters of an hour, talks calmly about the queen and Buckingham until the hour strikes ten, then resets the hands on his way out. He now has a witness who will swear he was nowhere near a broken mousetrap.
Coming Up in Chapter 11
His visit to Tréville paid, D'Artagnan takes the long way home, looking at the stars, sometimes sighing and sometimes smiling. He is thinking of Mme. Bonacieux: pretty, secret, and already bound to him by the rescue. Near Aramis's shutters, a cloaked woman starts counting windows.
