Near midnight the moon rises red behind Armentières. The Lys looks like molten tin. Two lackeys drag Milady to the bank. She whispers a thousand pistoles to Grimaud and Mousqueton if they will help her escape. Lord de Winter hears it and swaps them for Planchet and Bazin. The executioner binds her hands and feet. She calls them ten men combined to murder one woman. Athos says she is not a woman. She demands a real tribunal. Lord de Winter reminds her she refused Tyburn. D'Artagnan names Constance, who was younger and is already dead.
She offers to enter a cloister. The executioner reminds her she left one to ruin his brother. D'Artagnan, the youngest, covers his ears, then takes a step toward her. Athos draws and says one more step means they cross swords. D'Artagnan kneels and prays. Each man pardons her in turn. Athos pays the executioner so it is plain they act as judges. The man in the red cloak throws the silver into the river. He is paying a debt, not working a trade.
The boat goes to the left bank. She unties her feet, jumps, slips on the wet soil, and stays on her knees. The sword falls. He wraps the body in his cloak, stops in midstream, cries that the justice of God be done, and lets the corpse drop. Three days later the four are in Paris, still within their leave. Monsieur de Tréville asks if they have been well amused. Athos answers for them: prodigiously.
Pity arrives late once you have already voted for an ending. On the bank of the Lys, D'Artagnan covers his ears, takes a step toward Milady, and Athos draws and says one more step means they cross swords.
When you have already joined a final decision, say out loud whether your pity can still stop the act, or whether it is only a feeling you will carry after it.
On the sixth of the next month the king rides back toward La Rochelle, still bound to the cardinal. News of Buckingham's death spreads through the capital. The queen will not believe it until Laporte arrives from England with the duke's dying gift.
