Storm and darkness cover the road to Armentières. Athos has to hold D'Artagnan in the line every minute. The man in the red cloak will not answer anyone. Near the Post, Grimaud steps from a tree and signs that she has left Armentières. He leads them across a rivulet toward the Lys. Mousqueton and Bazin have already marked one lighted window in a small house by a ferry. Athos looks over the half-curtain. A woman in a dark mantle sits at a dying fire with her ivory hands on a poor table. She lifts her head, sees his pale face, and screams. He breaks the window and leaps in. D'Artagnan fills the door with a pistol. Athos tells him to put it back. This woman must be tried, not assassinated.
They name her Charlotte Backson, once Comtesse de la Fère, then Milady de Winter. D'Artagnan accuses her of poisoning Constance Bonacieux the night before. Porthos and Aramis bear witness. He adds the forged wine from Villeroy that killed Brisemont in his place, and the push to murder the Baron de Wardes. Lord de Winter adds Buckingham's assassination, Felton's ruin, and his own brother's strange death. Athos tells how he married her against his family and found the fleur-de-lis on her left shoulder. She defies them to name any tribunal that branded her.
The man in the red cloak unmasks. He is the executioner of Lille. He tells how she ruined his brother, a young priest, and how he marked her with the same iron. Each man in the room asks for death. Athos names her three titles and says her crimes have wearied men and God. If she knows a prayer, she should say it. She is condemned. A hand seizes her hair and takes her from the cottage. They leave a broken window, an open door, and a smoky lamp burning on the table.
When no official court will hear you, people still want a room that looks like justice. In the cottage by the Lys, Athos stops D'Artagnan's pistol and says this woman must be tried, not assassinated, then hears the charges for Constance, Brisemont, Buckingham, and the brand.
Before you punish someone outside the official process, write the charges where another person can hear them, and name who is actually judging.
Near midnight the moon rises red behind Armentières. The Lys looks like molten tin. An old mill stands with motionless wings. Two lackeys drag Milady toward the bank while she whispers prices and threats, and the executioner walks behind them with his sword.

A trial without a public record can still tell the truth about a life. It cannot give you the innocence of a court. If you need the word trial, ask what you are afraid to call the work.
