Milady and Rochefort know each other at once. He has ridden from La Rochelle because the cardinal was uneasy. She has come from England. Buckingham, she says, is dead or desperately wounded; a fanatic struck him, and she wrote the news from Boulogne. Then she names what one day in the convent has given her. Madame Bonacieux, the woman the queen hid, lives here as a novice and treats Milady as her best friend. D'Artagnan and his friends will come tomorrow or the next day with a queen's order. Rochefort cannot believe the cardinal still spares those four. Milady tells him to carry the whole charge: the Red Dovecot talk was overheard, her safe-conduct was taken, Lord de Winter was warned, and of the four only D'Artagnan and Athos are to be feared.
Rochefort's order is to take her dispatches and ride back. He cannot take her to camp; she might be known, and her face would stain the cardinal. She will wait nearby, and she smiles when he asks if Constance will escape: tell his Eminence he may be at ease. She takes his broken chaise, his full power, his lackey, and all his gold, and she names Armentières on the Lys as the place to find her. He must treat her harshly to the abbess so Constance keeps believing she is a victim. They smile, commend each other to the cardinal and to Satan, and he gallops. Five hours later he passes Arras, where D'Artagnan will know him and the four will ride harder.
A short meeting can do more damage than a long chase. In the convent room, Rochefort asks what to tell the cardinal about Madame Bonacieux, and Milady answers that he may be at ease, then takes his chaise, his gold, and a town on the Lys.
When a briefing ends with 'leave it to me,' name the person who is not in the room and what 'at ease' will cost them.
Madame Bonacieux comes back the moment Rochefort leaves, and finds Milady smiling. The young woman thinks the cardinal is sending someone this evening. Milady asks her to sit close, checks the corridor, and begins a quieter story: the messenger was playing a part.
