Milady lands at Boulogne as a Frenchwoman fleeing English hatred, the same woman who landed at Portsmouth as an Englishwoman fleeing France. Beauty, rank, and gold get her past the old governor of the port. She posts one letter to Cardinal Richelieu before she rides on: Buckingham will not set out for France, and she will wait for orders at the Carmelite convent at Béthune. That evening she reaches the house. The abbess reads the cardinal's paper, gives her a room, and comes back after breakfast hungry for court news. Milady feeds her scandals of lords and ladies, then tests whether the house is royalist or cardinalist. The abbess only bows at Richelieu's name, then lets slip that one boarder has already suffered the minister's vengeance.
Milady hears a chance and takes it. She tells the abbess she is not the cardinal's friend but his victim, held here by an order that is really a prison. The abbess, half convinced, names the other sufferer Kitty. The word lights an old anger. Milady thinks of her former maid, of the cardinal's promise, of D'Artagnan in her power, and of Athos, the husband she believed dead. She sleeps on those thoughts. A soft voice wakes her. The abbess has brought a fair novice in a habit. The face is unknown. This is not Kitty. The abbess leaves them for chapel.
The novice says she has been six months without recreation and hopes to leave at any moment. They trade stories of persecution. When the girl names Athos, then Porthos and Aramis, then Monsieur d'Artagnan, Milady's colour goes. Names keep landing until she sees the truth and cries that the novice is Madame Bonacieux. Constance asks if they are rivals. Milady swears she was never his mistress, only his friend, and that he taught her to love Constance before they met. The lie works. Constance falls into her arms. Behind that embrace Milady would have killed her if strength had matched hate.
Then Constance, proud and glad, shows a letter in Madame de Chevreuse's hand: their friend will come soon to take her from this prison, and the Gascon has proved himself again. A horse sounds in the road. Constance runs to the window hoping for D'Artagnan and sees a stranger instead. The abbess asks if a man from Boulogne may enter. Constance withdraws. The door opens on the Comte de Rochefort, the cardinal's tool. Milady cries out with joy.
Coming Up in Chapter 62
Rochefort has ridden from La Rochelle because the cardinal was uneasy. Milady has come from England. Buckingham, she says, is dead or desperately wounded; a fanatic struck him, and she already posted the news from Boulogne.
