She rises like a priestess and sings of a victim sent to Baal. She names Buckingham Antichrist. For a breath he believes. Then a homicide flash crosses her eyes. He remembers the baron's warnings and steps back. She drops the vision: she is not Judith; let her die. He begs the truth. She agrees to tell her brother. Lord de Winter comes in. She has Felton admit she asked for a knife. The baron offers Tyburn, warns John, and says that in three days she will harm nobody.
Alone she names the block: a Puritan clasps his hands; a Musketeer clasps his arms. An hour later Felton returns in secret. He has known her four days and loved de Winter four years, so he may hesitate. Tonight after twelve he will come, and she shall convince him. She swears she will not attempt her life until she has seen him. If she still persists, he will give her the weapon. She swears by their God. When he is gone she repeats that name as a blasphemy. It is she, and this fanatic, who will help her avenge herself.
When someone asks you to carry their honour, they may be offering you their death. Milady tells Felton she will lose what is dearer than life, her honour, and that he is responsible before God and men; later she swears by their God she will wait, then calls him a senseless fanatic who will help her avenge herself.
Before you take another person's name as your duty, ask what they will still do with that name when you have left the room.
She has a half-triumph and two days left. At midnight Felton posts a lie to the sentinel and comes in. She asks for the knife he promised. He has reflected, he says, and will not share that sin. She answers that she will not talk to a man who breaks his word.
