Milady knows Felton has fallen a step. She still has to keep him and make him speak. With Lord de Winter she will stay silent and dignified, then sting him so Felton sees the contrast. At breakfast Felton's lips move and no sound comes. Toward midday the baron finds her at the barred window, mocks her melancholy, and says that in four days England will be rid of her. She asks heaven to pardon him as she pardons him. Through the nearly closed door she sees Felton. She drops to her knees and goes on praying until he comes in.
Felton says the guilty are sacred at God's feet. She will take condemned, not guilty. She leads him to Buckingham as that wretch. The name is already a fire in him. Then she asks for the knife the baron took, one minute only, to save her honour. He cries that she means to kill herself. Lord de Winter's step sounds. She stops Felton's mouth. The baron passes. Felton rushes out. She thinks: at length you are mine. If he tells, she is lost. The baron knows she will not die on a knife.
In the evening Lord de Winter reads an unsigned order sending Charlotte Backson, branded in France, to live on five shillings a day, death if she flees. She stays silent from terror, then sees there is no signature. Tomorrow the paper goes to Buckingham. A day after it returns signed, it will be carried out. He names Felton, and she knows the lieutenant has not told. She still has four days, unless the baron sends Felton himself for the signature. At night she sings again. He does not enter. After the last verse, a sigh withdraws.
A crime you already believe can make a stranger's honour look like your duty. After Felton names George Villiers, Milady calls him the Duke of Buckingham, then begs one minute with a knife so he will have saved her honour.
When someone joins your old grudge and then asks for a tool, say the grudge aloud, then say what the tool would actually do.
Felton finds her on a chair with a rope of torn handkerchiefs and a gilt screw in the wall above her head. She calls it ennui. He names suicide. She answers that God pardons the death that stands between a soul and dishonour.
