Key Insight:
That is not hypocrisy in Kent. It is the price of remaining. If the only way to keep the person is a quieter role, the work is the remaining, not the rank. A loyalty that demands its old title back is still in the hall, waiting to be paid in status.

Company on the Heath
Lear contends with the fretful elements. Kent goes with him. None but the fool, who labours to out-jest his heart-struck injuries, is the other companion the report can name. The title has no roof. Presence does not always look like disclosure. Edgar withholds the name because the name, too early, would finish the man. If your first demand of a loyal person is that they also get to be recognized, you are still scoring the hall. The arm is the fact. The introduction can wait.

Sorrow That Becomes Her
A gentleman reports Cordelia receiving the letter. Sorrow would be a rarity most beloved if all could so become it. Kent still cannot show his face. Burning shame detains him from Cordelia. He is in the job and not yet in the reunion. Loyalty here is logistics: stay useful, stay hidden, get the news across the water.
Key Insight:
Not every faithful person gets a scene of recognition on time. Kent's shame is the cost of having stayed in costume. The work continues anyway. If you only count loyalty that arrives with its old name and a clean reunion, you will miss the people still carrying the letter.

Love Searches the Fields
Cordelia comes back with an army and no blown ambition, only love, dear love, and her aged father's right. She hears he is crowned with rank fumiter and furrow weeds, singing like the vexed sea. Lear, meeting them, says robes hide vices that tatters show. Loyalty can look like a lie. The ethic is not transparency at any cost. It is keeping the person alive until they can stand.

Count Who Walks, Not Who Toasts
After a demotion, a diagnosis, or a public humiliation, list who still shows up without an audience. That list is Kent and the Fool. Everyone else was on the payroll of the old title. Do not confuse a reunion speech with a walk in the rain.
Let Loyalty Change Clothes
Sometimes the only way to stay is a quieter role, or a withheld name, or a story that keeps a person alive until they can stand. Do not demand that the person who remains also get to use their old rank this afternoon. The work is the remaining.
Stay Without Collecting
Cordelia's no blown ambition, and later her no cause, are the opposite of a love test. If you return, do not make the wounded person re-audition. Help first. Keep the invoice off the table. An army that needs to be thanked is still in the hall.
