Conclusion — El Filibusterismo

On a solitary seashore Padre Florentino plays mournful harmonium airs until Civil Guard news arrives: a telegram orders the hidden Spaniard at his house captured alive or dead. Don Tiburcio flees, sure Victorina's cojera pun targets his lameness, but the priest knows the quarry is Simoun, wounded and fugitive, carrying his jewel chest into Filipino hospitality. Florentino recalls St John Chrysostom on vanity as the rich jeweler becomes a patient in the priest's own bedroom, windows open to sea air. Simoun refuses flight, smiles at arrest timed for eight o'clock, and chooses poison so no torturer can take his secret.

He confesses to Florentino: thirteen years ago Ibarra returned to marry and do good, was framed in an uprising, lost all, swore vengeance, bankrupted enemies through the General, and built the lamp plot Maria Clara's death and chance thwarted. Florentino answers that God frustrated each crime, that hate never produces anything but monsters, that redemption presupposes virtue, sacrifice, and love, not deceit and slaughter. He warns that corrupt revolt breeds mushrooms from filth, that like master like slave, and that liberty comes by making a people worthy, suffering and working, awaiting youth pure enough for sacrifice, lest today's slaves become tomorrow's tyrants.

Simoun dies gripping the priest's hand after asking if there is a God; Florentino prays for those who bent him from the straight path, then hauls the steel chest to the cliff where Isagani used to stare into the Pacific. Servants pray over the corpse while moonlight glitter on waves mocks earthly fortune. He hurls Simoun's wealth into the abyss, asking God to keep it from distorting justice until a holy purpose needs it. The novel closes not on explosion but on restraint: treasure sunk, doctrine spoken, the revolution deferred to a generation not yet ready. Florentino extends his hands over the water after the chest is gone, and the wave rolls on without giving anything back.
