Matanglawin, Cabesang Tales reborn as tulisan chief, terrorises much of Luzon from Albay to Kagayan: burning mills, murdering Tiani's Justice of the Peace, seizing Cavite arms, laughing as government crackdowns flog villagers who resist or who treat with his men. Disarmed towns empty before him; trade withers; the Guard tortures the first passerby it catches while rich travellers stay home. To hide weakness, authority marches six or seven bound suspects through May heat like human meat, lashed by Mautang while Carolino, a newer soldier, protests they are men like themselves. Mountain echoes mock the word cowards as branches raise welts on faces.
Mautang explains prisoners are beaten so they will try to escape, then bang, a bullet solves the problem. On a mountain road Matanglawin ambushes the column; Mautang falls; the wounded corporal orders Fire on the kneeling captives who cannot raise bound hands, begging with bowed heads about children and mothers before a volley silences them. A brief fight against hidden riflemen follows; Carolino is forced to shoot a figure on the rock who cries out familiarly, then bayonets find an old man with a spear who dies facing Carolino with a grief that needs no words.
The soldier Carolino is Tano, Tales' son, returned from the Carolines; the corpse is Tandang Selo, Juli and Basilio's grandfather, still pointing behind the rock even in death while soldiers bayonet a body that will not wink. Rizal titles the chapter Fatality: Simoun's failed revolution and colonial terror have fed a cycle where a grandson in Guard uniform kills the patriarch who went mute after Juli. No wedding lamp is required for massacre when the state trains countrymen to fire on countrymen and calls the result law.
The chapter links provincial revolt to intimate ruin: Tales' revenge reaches Tiani's magistrate while his own house loses Selo to Tano's compelled trigger. Guards climb the height chasing smoke and shadows, yet the novel's cruelest shot is the one Carolino fires at kin. When cruelty is policy and escape is bait, who can return from exile without blood on their hands, or without losing their mind?
