Basilio's arrest and a search of his books already broke the sick man; Irene's tales finish him, and the friar flees dragging Tiago's corpse from the bed.
Absurd alarms multiply: a soldier slashes at boys scrambling for baptism coins until choir curtains stop him, winning pure renown for mothers; suburbs chase strangers burying useless shotguns; a clerk shoots a policeman mistaking him for a student; a deaf man and a hog die at sentries while the hog is eaten and the man lacks burial money. Near the University confectionery, gossip says Tadeo is shot and Isagani surrendered though Paulita will marry a Spaniard anyway, and patrons burn borrowed books lest searches mark them accomplices. Households recite rosaries while sabres clank in empty streets, yet Placido's silversmith board still debates Salvi, Quiroga's smuggling plot, and a rumoured massacre until the pyrotechnician says Simoun's sickness paused the adviser of violence and workers leave clutching hammers like weapons.
Peninsular artillery replaces gate guards; Ben-Zayb steps over an abandoned native girl on the Luneta yet fills newspapers with banana-peel slips and cyclone charity, not local dead. Horatius answers Ben-Zayb's charity boast without naming her either. Rizal names the chapter tatakut and shows who profits when rumour replaces fact. When education scares the press and the press scares the city, who is left to count the real bodies?
