Rizal opens in the University of Santo Tomas physics hall, the Dominican college in Manila: bright windows, St Thomas Aquinas above the chair, walls bare of any real apparatus. Students memorize an experimental science without experiments; instruments appear once a year behind glass for visitors from Spain, who then praise the magnificent laboratory while noting Malay indolence. The friars, Rizal adds, bought the lab for touring officials, not for the two hundred fifty who pay fees and forget the year.
Padre Millon, young Dominican logician who trusts Aristotle more than the Jesuit laboratory, runs class like a phonograph test: recite mirrors by heart, good mark for zero errors, bad for three mistakes. He taunts a sleepy boy in market slang, then traps another with a polished kamagon stump until Juanito prompts a wooden mirror joke. Scholastic ergos follow: concede the surface is the essence and mercury may become bibinka; Juanito nego everything while Placido pulls his coat, until Placido yells and Millon turns on the meddler he has wanted to humiliate.
Millon forces Placido to defend the textbook, then mocks him as Placido the Prompter or the Prompted, fails him on the lesson, and opens the register. Because he seldom calls roll, each catch counts as five absences; three catches become fifteen, though Placido protested he missed at most five days and today stood in class to recite. When Placido asks how one can be absent and present at once, the friar answers with Latin and calls him philosophaster.
Placido throws down his book and leaves while the class stares at a dignity they rarely see. Millon preaches on arrogance and ties the walkout to the Castilian academy plot, telling students to finish degrees before language reform and to leave Spanish to clerks later. The bell frees two hundred thirty-four boys as ignorant as they entered, lighter only because another hour of dignity is gone. Rizal widens the scene to generations brutalised by the same hour, intelligences dimmed and resentment stored like filth rolling shoreward. If the lab is a stage and logic a weapon, who keeps calling that education?
Coming Up in Chapter 14
In Makaraig's boarding house students gamble, fence, and quarrel until news arrives that the Castilian petition may go to Don Custodio through Padre Irene's maneuver at Los Baños.
