Spain's transport minister resigns six days after a high-speed crash that killed 69 south of Madrid
On Tuesday, Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned in Congress after last week's high-speed collision near Urda, south of Madrid, which killed 69 people and injured about 200. A Renfe AVE was cleared to resume at normal speed after the LZB automatic safety system failed, with a stationary Iryo train ahead; the AVE travelled about 25 kilometres at more than 160 km/h before the impact. It was the second deadly crash on the Madrid-Seville line this year, after a January derailment that killed 46. Puente also withdrew from the 29 November election lists, saying a transport minister cannot remain after two accidents of that seriousness. Authorities have identified two Australians among 15 foreign nationals killed.

How literature reiterates life truths from today's headlines
When the system fails and the dead are counted, the living title still has to answer.
How it relates to today's headline
Tuesday's news is not a technical bulletin. It is a minister leaving office after a second catastrophe on the same high-speed line. Near Urda, the LZB safety system failed. A control centre still authorised a Renfe AVE to resume at ordinary speed with an Iryo train stopped ahead. The train covered about 25 kilometres at more than 160 km/h before the collision. Sixty-nine people are dead. About two hundred are hurt. Puente told Congress that a transport minister cannot stay after two accidents of that seriousness in less than a year, and he took his name off the November ballot as well. The useful story is not only how the override happened. It is who still had to stand up when the automatic protection did not.
William Shakespeare's King Lear watches a ruler treat the crown as something he can rearrange and then walk away from. Lear divides the kingdom, keeps the title's comforts, and discovers that when the realm breaks, the cost still finds the man who held the office. Spain's rail disaster is modern machinery, not a heath in a storm, but the pattern matches: the safety system failed, the authorisation went through, and the minister who kept the portfolio after January's forty-six dead now answers for sixty-nine more by resigning.
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is the other half of the lesson. Victor builds a force that can kill when left unsupervised, then keeps trying to treat the deaths as someone else's problem until the bodies force ownership. The LZB failure is the unsupervised machine. The control-centre clearance is the human choice that lets the machine run anyway. Puente did not throw the switch on the track, yet he accepted that the living title still had to answer for what the system and the override together produced.
The question after Tuesday is not whether software can replace a second pair of eyes. It is whether the next person who holds the office treats protection as optional once the lights go out, or as the reason the office exists.

King Lear
The life truth
Lear divides the kingdom and keeps the title's comforts; when the realm breaks, the cost still finds the man who held the office, just as Puente's portfolio answers for two crashes on the same line.
