After three weeks bedridden, Nelly asks Cathy to read in the library but the girl keeps urging her to bed early, yawning and rubbing her eyes as if exhausted by kindness. On the third evening Cathy claims a headache and vanishes upstairs. Nelly extinguishes her candle and waits by the window until moonlight reveals groom Michael leading Minny while Cathy climbs in through the casement.
Cathy confesses she has ridden to Wuthering Heights every single day since Nelly fell ill, bribing Michael with books. She describes tender evenings and quarrels, most dreary when Linton sulked or coughed, happiest when Zillah left them alone by the fire: heaven debated, toys marked C and H, Hareton proudly spelling his name until she laughs him off and he throws Linton into a rage that ends with blood and death threats at the locked parlour door.
Linton later blames Cathy to Heathcliff; she forgives his tearful self-loathing, keeps riding back, and begs Nelly for secrecy. Nelly walks straight to Edgar with the tale. He forbids further visits to the Heights but promises Linton may come to the Grange when he chooses, not knowing how damaged and spiteful the boy already is under Heathcliff's training.
