The Gascon has spent the night taking the bastion Saint-Gervais and wants rest. Athos asks if the Parpaillot is quiet. The walls here are like paper. They take Grimaud and go.
The inn is no better. The morning drum has emptied the camp into the drinking room. Dragoons, Swiss, Guards, and light-horsemen crowd the table. Monsieur de Busigny asks about the night's work. D'Artagnan names the bastion, five French dead, eight or ten Rochellais. Athos sees they will never talk here. He bets that the four of them will breakfast in the ruined bastion and stay an hour, whatever the enemy does. The stake is an unlimited dinner for eight. Porthos calls it a fair bet. D'Artagnan whispers that Athos is going to get them killed. Athos says they are more likely to be killed if they stay.
They pack the host's breakfast, pay two pistoles, and walk out under a crowd of the curious. Past the lines, Athos explains. A talk on the downs would reach the cardinal in a quarter of an hour. The bastion has no ears. If they are attacked they will still talk, and they will look like heroes. They will take muskets from the unplundered dead. Grimaud sits down and refuses to go on. Athos cocks a pistol at his ear. The lackey stands, takes the basket, and walks first. At the gate more than three hundred soldiers watch. Athos waves his hat on his sword. The camp cheers. All four disappear into the bastion.
When every public room has ears, loyalty has to look like a foolish sport. Athos cannot say a word in quarters or at the Parpaillot, so he bets Monsieur de Busigny that the four of them will breakfast for an hour in the ruined bastion Saint-Gervais.

The bastion holds only a dozen corpses, French and Rochellais. Athos takes command, tells Grimaud to spread the table, and sets the others to gathering guns. The dead, he says, cannot hear them. Then he names the secret: he saw Milady last night.
