One evening D'Artagnan is in the trenches. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis ride back from the Red Dovecot and halt two horsemen on the Boisnau road. The officer who drops his cloak is the cardinal. He knows their names and takes them as escort for his own security, not from mistrust. They confess a quarrel at the inn. Four drunk men tried to force a lady's door. Aramis has a slight arm wound. Athos threw a man from a window. Porthos broke a shoulder with a bench. They did not see the lady. A cavalier stayed shut up with her and did not come out.
At the inn a cloaked man exchanges rapid words with the cardinal and rides off toward Surgères and Paris. The cardinal knocks in a special way, leaves the Musketeers by a new chimney that replaced an old stove, and goes upstairs like a man who does not need his road pointed out.
The person who asks your name on a dark road may already know it. Athos challenges two horsemen near the Red Dovecot, the cloak drops, and the cardinal takes the three Musketeers as escort because he does not want it known he has left camp.
