Ma Joad moves through the sale with fierce practicality. She sorts, she prices, she decides. But each object she sets on the table carries a memory she cannot price: the plate from her wedding, the quilt Ruthie drags around the house. When those things sell for almost nothing, it is not just money lost. It is proof that strangers can look at the whole shape of your life and shrug. Ma tucks a few small items into her apron pocket, refusing to let the last pieces of herself be evaluated by people who do not know what they mean.

Pa haggles badly. Pride keeps getting in the way of need, which is a luxury he cannot afford but cannot seem to quit. Al argues for keeping tools that might save them on the road. The family negotiates not just with buyers but with each other, weighing every pound in the truck against every mile ahead. The math is brutal: if it is too heavy to carry and no one will buy it, you leave it in the yard and drive away.

The neighbors watching are not simply witnesses. They are doing the same math, holding their own yard sales, selling their own heirlooms to people who know desperation when they smell it. Dealers move through the sales like sharks, offering less than the objects are worth because they can. People who once traded eggs and labor without counting every cent now argue bitterly over a dollar. Hardship, Steinbeck shows us, does not automatically make people generous. Sometimes it makes them competitors.

The sale ends when there is nothing left worth selling. The Joads count what they made, convert it into gas and canned food, and load the truck. Ma closes her eyes for one moment before she climbs aboard. The past is now behind them, literally left in the yard. Whatever comes next, they cannot go back to buy what they sold.
