Chapter 08
Tom Reunites with the Joads
Tom Joad walks back into his family's life just as that life is being packed into boxes and loaded onto a truck. The reunion with Ma and Pa should feel like a celebration, but there is no time for that. The Joads are leaving Oklahoma, and the machinery of departure has already started turning. Ma studies Tom's face the way you study a dish after it's been dropped: looking for cracks. Prison can break a person in ways that don't show on the surface, and she needs to know if her son is still her son. He is, mostly. But…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Map Your Own Grief Schedule
Think of a time when something large and painful happened in your life and your first response was to get busy. Maybe you cleaned, organized, worked extra hours, or threw yourself into taking care of someone else. Write down what you did in the days right after the loss, and then ask yourself honestly: what were those tasks actually holding for you? This exercise is not about judging whether you handled it right. It is about seeing the pattern clearly so you can recognize it the next time it shows up.
Consider:
- •What was the task or set of tasks you reached for? Was it practical, like packing or cleaning, or was it relational, like focusing entirely on someone else's needs?
- •Was there a moment when the tasks ran out or slowed down? What happened inside you when the busyness stopped?
- •If someone close to you had been watching, would they have known you were grieving, or would you have looked like you were handling it fine?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you or someone you love looked completely fine on the outside because there was too much to do to fall apart. What were you actually carrying underneath all that motion, and what would you have needed someone to say or do when the work finally stopped?
