Chapter 23
Camp Entertainment Night
For one night at Weedpatch, the music wins. A harmonica starts it, a fiddle joins in, and before long the whole camp is moving. Steinbeck slows down here to catalog something easy to overlook in a story about suffering: the way people protect their own spirits when the world gives them half a chance. Entertainment at the camp is not escapism. It is evidence that the Joads and their neighbors are still fully human, still capable of laughter, still able to teach their children a dance step instead of just a lesson in how to endure. The dance is also…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Find the Justifying Story
Every effort to control or dismiss a group of people rests on a story, usually something like: they are dangerous, they cannot manage themselves, they need supervision. Think of one group you belong to or care about, at work, in your neighborhood, in your family, that someone else has told that story about. Write down what the justifying story is, then write down two or three things that group already does that quietly disprove it.
Consider:
- •The justifying story does not have to be said out loud to do damage. Sometimes it lives in the way a supervisor watches certain employees more closely, or in the assumptions behind a policy.
- •The Weedpatch migrants did not argue against the story. They removed the evidence the story needed. Think about whether arguing back or simply acting differently would be more effective in your situation.
- •Small, consistent actions, like sweeping a floor or showing up on time or running a clean meeting, can carry more weight than a single dramatic gesture. What small actions is your group already taking that deserve to be named out loud?
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when you or someone you know proved something without saying a word. What was the situation, what did you do, and did it change anything? If it did not change the other person's mind, did it change yours?
