Chapter 22
Weedpatch Government Camp
After weeks of filth, fear, and being chased off land like animals, the Joads roll into Weedpatch and find something they had almost forgotten existed: a place that treats them like people. The federally run camp charges almost nothing, keeps the toilets clean, runs hot showers, and lets migrants govern themselves through elected committees. Nobody is calling them Okies here. Nobody is threatening them with deputies. For the first time since they left Oklahoma, the family can breathe without bracing for a blow. The change moves through each of them differently. Ma Joad stands at a real laundry line with…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Draw Your Floor
Take a piece of paper and draw a simple horizontal line across the middle. Above the line, write three things you are able to do, think about, or say no to when you feel stable. Below the line, write three things that become harder, slower, or impossible when you are in survival mode. This is not about weakness. It is about understanding your own operating conditions the way a mechanic understands an engine.
Consider:
- •Stability does not have to mean financial security. For some people, a floor is one good night of sleep, one person in their corner, or one week without a crisis. What counts as a floor is personal.
- •Notice whether the things above your line are about you alone or about other people too. When you have a floor, who else benefits from your clearer thinking and calmer presence?
- •The Joads did not build Weedpatch themselves. Someone built it for them, and that mattered. Think about whether any floor you have ever stood on was partly built by someone else, and whether you have ever helped build one for another person.
Journaling Prompt
Write about a specific moment when something shifted for you, when you went from barely holding on to having just enough room to breathe. What created that shift? Was it something you did, something someone gave you, or something that just changed around you? And what did you do with that breathing room once you had it?
