Sally Leaves the Rink — The Catcher in the Rye

At the Rockefeller rink the argument comes into the open. Holden insults Sally's world, her friends, the status and the rituals. She cries and says he ruins every good time. He feels guilty and cannot stop. Then he tells her she gives him a royal pain. She says he needs help and goes to change her shoes. His apology is thin. Mostly he is relieved. He did not want her. He wanted a listener for the escape, without judgement.

Alone, he thinks of calling Jane and still cannot. Allie returns: the garage, the windows smashed with his fist the night of the funeral. Grief and the fresh insult blur until he cannot sort them. He knows he pushes people away because closeness feels less safe. He buys a way into Radio City so he will not have to stand still. The insult hangs in the cold after Sally is gone.

Radio City is only a ticket away from standing still. He buys it because movement feels safer than another apology. Sally is gone. Allie's windows are not. Every attempt at company this weekend has ended in a fight or a humiliation, and this one is no different. The cold keeps the sentence he cannot take back.
