Radio City Music Hall — The Catcher in the Rye

Holden sits through the Radio City holiday show and then a war documentary. The Rockettes move in perfect lines. On the screen soldiers die, and he watches a general hand out water in a way that feels staged. The audience eats sweets. He thinks of D.B., of the war, of Hollywood turning pain into something you can buy a ticket for. He leaves sick.

On the wet street he is nearly out of money. Phoebe is dangerous because his parents might be home. A former teacher is not yet a plan he can face. He eats in a drugstore, drinks, and fails at small talk with strangers. Childhood trips to the museum and the zoo come back as rooms where knowledge stayed still. He is afraid of the change that turns children into the adults he hates. By the end he is looking for someone older who might tell him what to do.

Strangers in the drugstore do not become company. Each awkward exchange feeds the fear that adult rooms have a script he missed. He still has not chosen a bed. The holiday music in the lobby sounds wrong once the documentary has done its work. He has no destination that feels clean.
