Summary

Lao Tzu opens with a direct claim about weapons. Arms, however beautiful, are instruments of evil omen, hateful to all creatures. Those who have the Tao do not like to employ them. Violence is not a tool the wise person reaches for first, even when the weapons are fine and the cause sounds justified.

Then he turns to the superior man and the left and right hand custom. In ordinary life the left hand is the most honourable place, but in time of war the right hand. Sharp weapons remain instruments of evil omen, not the instruments of the superior man. He uses them only on the compulsion of necessity. Calm and repose are what he prizes. Victory by force of arms is undesirable to him. To consider victory desirable would be to delight in the slaughter of men, and he who delights in the slaughter of men cannot get his will in the kingdom.

Lao Tzu closes with the ritual logic of mourning. On occasions of festivity the left hand is prized; on occasions of mourning, the right hand. The second in command of the army has his place on the left; the general commanding in chief has his on the right, assigned as in the rites of mourning. He who has killed multitudes of men should weep for them with the bitterest grief. The victor in battle has his place rightly according to those rites. Even necessary force carries grief, not celebration.

Grieving Necessary Force

The hardest conflicts are the ones you cannot avoid without losing something that matters. Lao Tzu says the general commanding in chief takes the right hand, the place assigned in the rites of mourning, and the victor should weep with the bitterest grief for those killed.

Before you act, ask whether you can finish with grief instead of triumph.
