Summary

Magwitch tells his life story with brutal honesty, revealing how society shaped him into a criminal from birth. Born into nothing, he learned survival through theft and violence, cycling in and out of jail while authorities labeled him 'hardened' instead of helping. At Epsom races, he met Compeyson, a smooth-talking gentleman criminal who recruited him as a partner. But partnership meant slavery: Compeyson used his education and social standing to manipulate Magwitch into doing the dangerous work while keeping himself safe.

Their criminal enterprise included forgery, fraud, and passing stolen notes. Compeyson's other associate, Arthur, died in terror, haunted by visions of a woman in white seeking revenge. When both men were finally caught and tried together, the class divide became deadly clear. Compeyson appeared in court as a refined gentleman, while Magwitch looked like the common criminal he'd been branded as since childhood.

The defence painted Compeyson as a misled youth corrupted by Magwitch's bad influence. Result: Compeyson got seven years, Magwitch got fourteen. On the prison ship, Magwitch attacked Compeyson and both men escaped to the marshes, where Pip first encountered them years ago. Herbert realises that Compeyson was Miss Havisham's false lover, and Arthur was her half-brother.

The revelation connects Pip's two worlds in ways that make his situation even more dangerous. Magwitch's story exposes how the justice system protects privilege while punishing poverty, and how childhood abandonment creates adults vulnerable to exploitation.
