After leaving Simoun, Basilio has no lodging, no money, only cartridges and the memory of the lamp due to explode within two hours, warned to stay away from Calle Anloague yet drawn straight toward it. He fantasises headless passers-by and himself dictating from pyramids of corpses, patting the revolver like a man already condemned. Missing Isagani, he decides not to warn his generous friend, sure Isagani would reject butchery. Juli's ghost hardens him again as he regrets the hour has not come.
He connects Simoun's fiesta talk with Capitan Tiago's house, now wedding-ready, and follows carriages toward Calle Rosario until he sees Paulita Gomez in white beside Juanito Pelaez, poor Isagani nowhere in sight. Simoun exits with the wrapped lamp and enters a carriage; Basilio recognises cochero Sinong, who once drove him to San Diego and brought Tiani news in prison. Basilio hurries to Calle Anloague ahead of the escorted party, guessing guests seek a ball but will actually dance in the air, while civil guards mark the fiesta's rank and an orchestra plays where Basilio once kept solitary books.
Don Timoteo Pelaez reaches the apex of fortune: Juanito weds the Gomez heiress in Tiago's half-price house, furnished with Simoun's loan and Manila's elite. Timoteo misquotes Simoun on the Captain-General living in him, sure the patron will dine and gift a lamp better than Aladdin's. Rizal tours the vulgar splendour: Louis XV furniture, chromos instead of saints because Filipino artists might seem seditious, carpets and mirrors erasing Tiago's opium past, hallway tables for mortals and a gilded kiosk on the azotea for the greater gods.
Silver service, fine linen, costly wine, and only seven plates await the august table under an arch that shields heads from jealous stars. Timoteo would commit crime if cannibal taste required it. Ordinary diners will fill hallway tables for thirty and smaller side places, never guessing the kiosk above them. Rizal sets feast against fuse: Basilio watches the house where he once studied while the bomb rides in with the bridal party. When prestige fills seven seats above a hidden charge, who counts as guest versus kindling?
Coming Up in Chapter 35
By seven in the evening lesser officials and merchants arrive at Don Timoteo's fiesta, loosening their manners as light and glass mount, while Manila dances on Rizal's volcano.
