Summary

Ich weiss nicht: Rizal opens chapter three with the Lorelei melancholy before Padre Florentino climbs to a deck that has forgotten Simoun's canal quarrel. Sherry, Pasig houses, and the prospect of breakfast restore laughter; friars trade Hong Kong rent jokes while Padre Camorra plays deaf on baptism fees. The steamer crosses the bar into Laguna's mirror of emerald shore and Makiling's cloud crown, and beauty silences them until Ben-Zayb asks the captain where Guevara, Navarra, or Ibarra was killed. Simoun looks away. The captain whispers Kinabutasan, two miles under bullets, blood on the shore, thirteen years ago today. Sibyla says Ibarra went to join his father; Camorra laughs that filibusters get cheap funerals. Simoun stands motionless while the captain defends the lake's size against seasick jokes.

Legends kept the table warm; the calendar date did the work Florentino's fairy tale could not. If Crisostomo Ibarra survived that swim, who on this boat already knows, and who is waiting for the steamer to land before they speak?
