Pasta is one of the city's most talented lawyers and the man friars call when their affairs turn difficult. He keeps writing without offering a seat, then looks up, smiles, and asks after Uncle Florentino. When Isagani explains the Castilian academy and hopes Pasta will speak to Don Custodio, the old man's face darkens and he exclaims that these islands are the land of projects.
Pasta has already decided not to help. He knows Los Baños split Irene's faction from Sibyla's Commission trick, that merchants hope to sell academy materials, and that asking Custodio would mean picking a side he has spent a lifetime avoiding. He will confuse the youth with evasions about prudence, delicate position, and too many interests. Isagani insists they only want a fair reading of government aims, but Pasta launches a lecture: aiding the state is laudable only when submission matches authority, and to ask is to menace colonial prestige built on unquestioned initiative. Isagani answers that prestige rests on consent, that petitioners appeal to a mother not a stepmother, and that a government which fears questions acts like a tyrant while even courts and churches keep asking.
The lawyer calls such talk filibusterism and bad Madrid doctrines, hunts for spectacles, and forgets what he meant to say about colonial governments needing other reasons to deny just requests. He sends Isagani away to wait for a rector's reform, study for exams, and stop bothering about Spanish he already speaks well. Then he offers Bentham-style counsel: marry a rich devout girl, apply leeches, charge well, shun national causes, remember charity begins at home, and leave quixotism to those who will be laughed at. Isagani replies that gray hairs earned only for himself would shame him, bows, and leaves Pasta staring at the door.
Alone, Pasta murmurs poor boy, remembering he once wanted laurel for the fatherland too, then chose survival and daily bread. Rizal shows the decent method Isagani promised meeting a mind that survived by refusing to ask. When the lawyer friars trust will not speak to Custodio, where does the academy petition go next?
