When they stopped to borrow shovels Cash heard the graphophone playing in the house, and after the grave was done pa said he reckoned he better take them back himself. Jewel wanted speed and said he could have toted them shovels back and forth ten times by now, but pa got down anyway because long as it was me that borrowed them. They sat in the wagon waiting while the music stopped. Cash mused that a little music might be about the nicest thing a fellow could have after a tired night, though work might never get done if you had one in the house.
After Peabody's pa went to the barbershop for a shave. That night he had business to tend to, looking away with wet slick perfumed hair, and Cash said leave him be. Next morning pa asked, I don't reckon you got no more money. Cash had only enough from Peabody for the hotel. Pa said wait at the corner. Jewel drove Cash on a pallet across the square while Dewey Dell and Vardaman ate bananas.
Pa came hangdog and proud at once, like when ma would not have liked what he was up to, and Jewel said he got them teeth. A duck-shaped dressed-up woman with hard pop eyes followed carrying a grip that was a little graphophone shut up pretty as a picture. Cash thought what a shame Darl could not enjoy the winter records, then said it is better so for him because this world is not his world. Pa would not quite look at them. Meet Mrs. Bundren, he says. If a burial vow ends with teeth, music, and a new wife at the corner, what was the trip really paying for all along?
Have you ever watched a family ordeal finish with the person who drove it collecting comfort items while the one who saw too much was sent away? Cash waits in the wagon with bananas while Anse asks for any leftover money, then returns with false teeth and a new wife carrying the graphophone that played while pa borrowed shovels.
After a crisis vow completes, list what the leader gained versus what the clearest witness lost before you accept the introduction as an ending.

The cards below name the patterns this chapter proves — carry them with you into Faulkner's voices.
Holding Absurd Commitments
Minutes after burial Anse returns with false teeth, a graphophone, and a new wife. The promise to bury Addie in Jefferson was also a trip to upgrade Anse. The box is in the ground. The living rearrange around prizes.
Key Insight
Some absurd commitments were never only about the dead. The destination can be a cover story for what the leader wanted once the audience was watching.

Reading Competing Perspectives
Cash closes the novel remembering graphophone music, Anse asking for more money, new teeth, and a duck-shaped woman with a grip. Darl is in Jackson. Addie is buried. The last line is introduction, not goodbye. Every surviving narrator gets an ending except the one who named the absurdity earliest.
Key Insight
Endings do not resolve perspective. They crown one version. Ask who gets the final scene, who gets the new wife, and who gets sent away still laughing.

Surviving Chaos You Did Not Create
Cash blesses Darl's exile while Anse introduces a new wife. The chaos ends not with justice but with rearrangement. Those who stayed get bananas and a graphophone. The one sent away gets called not of this world.
Key Insight
Survival is not always repair. Sometimes it is enduring the ending the leaders choose and refusing to call it wisdom because they said so.

When Grief Becomes Performance
Addie is buried. Anse returns with new teeth, a graphophone, and a wife introduced at the kerb. Meet Mrs. Bundren is the last line of performed renewal. Mourning ends not in silence but in introduction.
Key Insight
The fastest grief reset is the surest sign the grief was never the point. When the funeral trip ends in upgrades, believe the upgrades.

Chapter 59
Cash (5) So when we stopped there to borrow the shovels we heard the graphophone playing in the house, and so when we got done with the shovels pa says, “I reckon I better take them back.” So we went back to the house. “We better take Cash on to Peabody’s,” Jewel said. “It won’t take but a minute,” pa said. He got down from the wagon. The music was not playing now. “Let Vardaman do it,” Jewel said. “He can do it in half the time you can. Or here, you let me—” “I reckon I better do it,”…
