We hitched up and laid Cash on top of Addie, Darl says, because after Jewel fetched Armstid's team there was no other flat place for the injured builder except the box Cash warned was not on a balance. Cash vomited again but turned his head over the wagon side in time. Dewey Dell leaned down and heard only his tools. Vernon loaded them where Cash could see while Vernon walked gingerly back toward the bridge like a man who had said enough.
At Armstid's gate they carried Cash inside where Mrs. Armstid had a bed ready. Anse kept saying for her sake he took the food and would not come into the house until whiskey let him talk about getting another team. After supper he had good as bought one, and Darl ended not at Cash's bedside but in the barn watching Anse curry Jewel's horse, cursing it in a whisper of obscene caress while striking with the back of the currycomb.
The injured builder lay inside asking for his saw while the father tended an animal and a purchase. Armstid will feed Anse more whisky, Uncle Billy will set Cash's leg with a mattress and a chair, and buzzards will circle what heat brings to the shed. Who gets carried inside when a vow keeps the trip moving?
When a group pushes through after a wreck, who gets the worst place to rest while someone else handles animals or purchases? Darl steadies Cash laid on Addie while Anse takes food for her sake and ends currying Jewel's horse after buying a team.
This week, ask who was carried inside, who rode ahead, and who ended up in the barn when a family treated motion as love.
Armstid watches Anse buy mules on credit from Snopes after whisky, Jewel ride for Peabody at midnight, and Uncle Billy set Cash's broken leg with a chair, mattress, and another glass of whisky.

Chapter 42
Darl (14) On the horse he rode up to Armstid's and came back on the horse, leading Armstid's team. We hitched up and laid Cash on top of Addie. When we laid him down he vomited again, but he got his head over the wagon-bed in time. "He taken a lick in the stomach too," Vernon said. "The horse may have kicked him in the stomach too," I said. "Did he kick you in the stomach, Cash?" He tried to say something. Dewey Dell wiped his mouth again. "What's he say?" Vernon said. "What is it, Cash?" Dewey Dell said.…

The vow can turn people into cargo. When the injured are stacked on the sacred load, the commitment has stopped serving the family and started consuming it.
