As I Lay Dying Ch. 34: It Ain't on a Balance

Summary

Before us the thick dark current runs, Darl says, clucking among the spokes and about the mules' knees while Jewel sits the trembling horse and Cash and Darl share a long probing look that reaches the old terror between brothers. They talk quietly of Vernon's whiteoaks and the old ford road while Jewel asks what you want me to do. I ain't going to let nothing hurt you, he murmurs to the horse. Go on, now.

Cash looks back at Addie. It ain't on a balance, he says, and says it again before the mules enter the water. Jewel curses delay and offers to take the wagon. Darl proposes the rope plan upstream. Cash wedges Addie forward with his toolbox. Darl stays in the wagon holding the rope end.

A log surges upright upon the heaving water like Christ and bears down on the team. Let the rope go, Cash says. Jump clear, he tells Darl quietly. Stay away from the team. The mules vanish with a sound almost human and roll over stiff-legged in the flood. Cash shouts back, Jewel, still bracing Addie on the tilting wagon. What do you do when the careful person names the flaw twice and the group drives into the ford anyway?

Why This Matters

Stop When Balance Is Named Twice

Has someone ever repeated the same warning about an unbalanced load while everyone else treated delay as betrayal? Cash tells Darl it ain't on a balance twice before the mules enter the ford, then says jump clear when the log hits.

This week, when someone building or driving the load names the same flaw twice, pause the trip and fix it before you enter the water.

Coming Up in Chapter 35

Vardaman runs the bank hollering catch her Darl catch her while Cash and Darl fight the current and the coffin goes under and Darl's hands come up empty out of the water.

At the ford Cash repeats it ain't on a balance while Jewel curses and offers to drive. Darl holds the rope. Cash wedges Addie forward with his tools. Nobody converts the warning into a stop. Each brother takes a role while the vow drives into the river anyway.

Key Insight

Distributed loyalty at a crisis point looks like teamwork until the competent voice keeps saying stop and the wagon keeps moving.

Cash says it ain't on a balance three times at the ford while Jewel demands they cross now. A log strikes the wagon. Mules roll stiff-legged in the flood. The vow meets physics and keeps going anyway because stopping would look like betrayal.

Chapter 34

It Ain't on a Balance

Darl (12) Before us the thick dark current runs. It talks up to us in a murmur become ceaseless and myriad, the yellow surface dimpled monstrously into fading swirls travelling along the surface for an instant, silent, impermanent and profoundly significant, as though just beneath the surface something huge and alive waked for a moment of lazy alertness out of and into light slumber again. It clucks and murmurs among the spokes and about the mules' knees, yellow, skummed with flotsam and with thick soiled gouts of foam as though it had sweat, lathering, like a driven horse. Through the…

Stop When Balance Is Named Twice

Cash says it ain't on a balance twice before the mules enter the ford. Darl proposes the rope plan. A log surges upright like Christ and strikes the wagon. Cash tells Darl jump clear while still bracing Addie. Write about a time someone named the same flaw twice before a plan failed. Did the group stop, fix it, or drive into the ford anyway?

Consider:

•What was the repeated warning?
•Who wanted to rush forward?
•What visible hazard finally broke the plan?
