War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

Listen to Next Chapter

Pierre gallops after a general, is shouted at by infantry, and drifts onto the Kolocha bridge without knowing it is the fight.

He reaches Raevski's redoubt, is adopted as our gentleman, jokes with gunners while shells fall, and watches courage sharpen into family warmth.

When ammunition fails and the young officer falls, Pierre runs toward the wagons and is thrown by an explosion. Baptism of fire ends in concussion, not clarity. The explosion at the ammunition wagons ends his first hour as our gentleman.

Why This Matters

Connect literature to life

Skill: Reading Initiation Under Fire

Pierre is mocked, adopted, and ignited beside gunners who joke between shells. When a group pulls you in under danger, ask what wider picture you stop seeing. Keep one eye on the wider field when camaraderie in the trench feels like home.

Coming Up in Chapter 222

Pierre awakens from the explosion to find himself in the aftermath of devastating carnage. The battle's outcome hangs in the balance as he witnesses the true cost of war firsthand.

Chapter 221

Pierre's Baptism of Fire

Having descended the hill the general after whom Pierre was galloping turned sharply to the left, and Pierre, losing sight of him, galloped in among some ranks of infantry marching ahead of him. He tried to pass either in front of them or to the right or left, but there were soldiers everywhere, all with the same preoccupied expression and busy with some unseen but evidently important task. They all gazed with the same dissatisfied and inquiring expression at this stout man in a white hat, who for some unknown reason threatened to trample them under his horse’s hoofs. “Why…

Key Quotes & Analysis

"Why ride into the middle of the battalion?” one of them shouted at him."

— Russian soldier

Context: Pierre blundering through marching ranks

Civilian in the way.

In Today's Words:

Soldiers shout at Pierre for riding into marching ranks. He is a tourist in others' labor and danger. Ask whether you are helping or obstructing before you enter the line. Name who gains leverage and who bears the private cost once the room empties. Track who benefits from the story told afterward.

"I congratulate you, Count, on your baptism of fire!”"

— Raevski's adjutant

Context: Noticing Pierre's wounded horse

Iron welcome.

In Today's Words:

The adjutant congratulates Pierre on his baptism of fire when his horse is shot. Initiation arrives as a joke while the animal bleeds. First contact with war is often absurd, not heroic. Name who gains leverage and who bears the private cost once the room empties.

"They seemed not to have expected him to talk like anybody else, and the discovery that he did so delighted them."

— Narrator

Context: Gunners accept Pierre at the battery

Adopted outsider.

In Today's Words:

Gunners delight when Pierre speaks like an ordinary man, not a performing gentleman. Shared plain talk turns a white-hat intruder into family. Humor bridges class inside the trench. Name who gains leverage and who bears the private cost once the room empties. Track who benefits from the story told afterward.

"Pierre did not look out at the battlefield and was not concerned to know what was happening there; he was entirely absorbed in watching this fire which burned ever more brightly and which he felt was flaming up in the same way in his own soul."

— Narrator

Context: At Raevski's redoubt under fire

Inner blaze.

In Today's Words:

Pierre stops watching the wider field and watches the gunners' fire grow brighter, feeling the same flame in his soul. Crisis can fuse self and group until strategy disappears. Name when fervor replaces sight. Name who gains leverage and who bears the private cost once the room empties.

Discussion Questions

This is not a test. Five prompts guide you through the chapter, from how it opens to how it closes, so you notice context and rhythm rather than facts to memorize. Sit with each question in your own words. When you see "One way to read it," treat it as a starting point, not the only answer.

Critical Thinking Exercise

10 minutes

Map Your Belonging Strategy

Think of a group where you're currently an outsider or newcomer—a workplace, neighborhood, hobby group, or social circle. Write down three specific actions Pierre took to earn acceptance, then identify three concrete actions you could take in your situation that follow the same pattern of shared risk and genuine presence.

Consider:

  • •Focus on what you can contribute, not what you can gain from the group
  • •Look for unglamorous tasks that others avoid—these often build the most credibility
  • •Consider how you can share the same challenges the group faces rather than staying protected

Journaling Prompt

Write about a time when someone earned your respect through their actions during a difficult situation. What specifically did they do that changed your opinion of them?
