Tom Is Shot — To Kill a Mockingbird

Scout remembers the September heat more than a date. Jem tells her what Dill saw when Atticus and Calpurnia went to the Robinson place. Dill had been in the car. He watched Helen come out, watched Atticus speak, and watched her collapse in the dirt as if the news had cut the strings that held her up. A widow falls in her own yard. The men lift her and stay until the first shock has a place to land. Scout is too young to have been taken along and old enough to keep the scene. Helen's body told the truth before any neighbour's talk could dress it up.

Mr Underwood writes an editorial that will not follow the town's easy line. He says it is a sin to kill a crippled man who did no harm, and he reaches for the image of a songbird shot for sport. The comparison is local and plain. His piece gives Tom a print memorial the jury refused him. It does not bring Tom back. It names the killing as something worse than procedure.

Many white people take the opposite lesson. Tom tried to climb the fence, they say, so he must have been guilty. A man who runs must have had something to run from. They do not dwell on the seventeen shots, or on a left arm that could not have carried him over wire, or on what a prison farm is for a Black man after a white jury has finished with him. Escape becomes confession. Scout hears this talk as the air everyone expects her to breathe. What she understands is simpler and colder. Maycomb was never going to trust a Black man's word against the Ewells. Evidence could delay a jury. It could not outweigh the race of the speaker. Tom's last minutes on the fence are used as a seal on a verdict that had been waiting before he took the stand.
