The Missionary Circle — To Kill a Mockingbird

Alexandra hosts the missionary circle in the Finch living room: good china, careful clothes, and a programme of pity aimed far from Maycomb. The ladies speak with feeling about African tribes they have never met. The same mouths, once the talk turns local, grow sharp about Maycomb's Black community after the trial. Cooks and field hands are called sullen. Tom's people are treated as a problem of attitude rather than a wound. Scout, stuffed into a dress and told to hand round refreshments, tries to be quiet, clean, and agreeable. She watches the gap between the prayerful tone and the cruel gossip.

Miss Maudie will not play along. When the hypocrisy grows thick she shuts it down with a look and a single hard sentence. Scout sees that being a lady can mean holding a line when the conversation goes rotten. Calpurnia moves through the serving with her usual command, a Black woman in a white parlour that is discussing her neighbours as a nuisance. The tea continues because that is what the afternoon is for.

Atticus comes home in the middle of the meeting and calls Alexandra, Maudie, Scout, and Calpurnia aside. Tom Robinson is dead. He was shot climbing the prison fence, and the guards used seventeen bullets to stop a man with one good arm. Atticus asks Calpurnia to go with him to tell Helen. Maudie tells Alexandra the town dumps its difficult moral work on a few people and then forgets. They compose their faces and go back to pour tea as if nothing has happened. Scout understands what being a lady means in that room: you keep the cups moving while a man lies dead and a widow still waits to be told.
