At four o'clock the four friends sit with Athos, their outfits done, each face still holding a private fear. Planchet brings two letters. One is a small billet with a dove in green wax: be on the Chaillot road between six and seven, look into the carriages, and do not speak if you value your life or those who love you. No signature. Athos calls it a snare and names the empty road. They decide all four will go, lackeys and arms included. The second letter, under the cardinal's arms, orders D'Artagnan to the Palais-Cardinal at eight. Aramis would skip his Eminence. D'Artagnan will keep both hours. He ignored a like summons from Monsieur de Cavois, and the next day Constance disappeared.
Aramis has three horses. A groom out of livery left one that morning without naming a master. D'Artagnan buys the unused mount for eight hundred livres and chinks the rest of the pistoles in his pocket. They ride out as a show: Athos on a horse owed to a woman, Aramis on one owed to his mistress, Porthos on one owed to the procurator's wife, D'Artagnan on one owed to luck. Near the Louvre, Monsieur de Tréville praises the kit and, hearing only of the red seal, promises to find the Gascon if he does not appear tomorrow.
On the Chaillot road a carriage from Sèvres throws a woman's head from the window, two fingers on her mouth. D'Artagnan takes her for Madame Bonacieux and gallops after. The window shuts. He remembers the order to stay still, and stops for her sake, not his. Athos thought he saw a man's head inside. At half past seven they place twelve Musketeers at the palace gates. D'Artagnan walks in sure that Milady and De Wardes have filled the cup. The cardinal's Guards smile. An usher leads him to a man correcting uneven lines of a tragedy called Mirame. The poet looks up. It is the cardinal.
Two invitations in one hour can both be real and both be traps. D'Artagnan keeps the unsigned Chaillot note and the cardinal's eight o'clock summons because he once ignored Monsieur de Cavois and Constance disappeared the next day.
When two doors open on the same night, you can name which fear is driving the second yes before you climb the stair.
The cardinal leans on his manuscript and looks at D'Artagnan as if the glance itself were a fever. He asks if the young man is a D'Artagnan from Béarn, then begins to recite the road from Meung as if he had ridden it.

Suddenly Planchet entered, bringing two letters for D’Artagnan. The one was a little billet, genteelly folded, with a pretty seal in green wax on which was impressed a dove bearing a green branch.
