Chapter 39
Nick at the Back Door
Offred climbs the stairs to Nick's room above the garage, heart loud in her chest. The space is spare: a bed, a chair, the faint smell of tobacco. Nick is younger than the Commander, quieter, and unknown in ways that feel both dangerous and like relief. They stand there awkwardly at first, and then the distance between instruction and desire collapses into touch. What begins is not a romance. It is something more urgent and more honest than that. The affair gives Offred something Gilead has been systematically removing: a choice. Not a large one, not a safe one, but…
Critical Thinking Exercise
Map the Faucet
Think of one area in your life where someone else controls access to something you genuinely need, whether that is approval, information, opportunity, affection, or stability. Draw a simple two-column list: on the left, write what they have given you recently that felt like relief. On the right, write what they have withheld or could take back. When you look at both columns together, ask yourself honestly whether this is a relationship built on generosity or one built on managed scarcity.
Consider:
- •Notice whether the good moments feel like gifts you earned or gifts you were allowed to have. That distinction matters more than it might seem at first.
- •Ask whether your behavior has quietly shifted to avoid triggering the withholding side of the list. Changed behavior is often the clearest signal that the pattern is already working on you.
- •Consider what you would do differently if the thing they control were suddenly available from another source. Your answer tells you how much of your energy is going toward the faucet rather than toward your actual goals.
Journaling Prompt
Write about a time when someone's occasional kindness made it harder, not easier, to see clearly what was actually happening in that relationship. What did you tell yourself at the time, and what do you see now that you did not let yourself see then?
